Hey guys just got my thermocouple and pyrometer today. How should I put it in my forge? I don't want the lead wires to melt. I was thinking maybe threw the side.

On my Even Heat the thermocouple enters from the top. The lead wires are the same as the tip of thermocouple. A thermocouple is merely two dissimilar metal wires connected together at its end. Stick her in there to about mid point of chamber. If you need to lengthen the thermocouple you can use ordinary copper wire but you don't want the copper in your forge/furnace.

Another trick is to put the thermocouple in a piece of 1/4 or 1/2" stainless pipe as a thermocouple well. The pipe heats up and the thermocouple (inside the pipe) is not exposed to the flames. Since the metal heats up similar to the way a blade will,it reads the forge temp, not the flame temp. You can add a well when making your forge or add one later. You can even just lay it in the forge bottom. This works especially well with metal clad (jacketed)thermocouples.

I think I might drill a hole in the top of my forge because I already tried putting it in the bottom of the forge and the heat coming out the front melted some of the wire insulation. I also got the protection tube for the thermocouple so I don't think I will have to use the pipe idea, thanks thought for you input.
