i just got an omega pid... that i'm going to use for a gas heat treat forge

i'm a little lost on the thermocouple part.... what is a good probe to use... from what i read the K series is the right range.. ( since i only work with simple steels )
do you need a case for it or will it burn out faster?
- do the wires come with it

and do you need a grounded probe ?

i'm surprised there is so much info on it... my eyes are spinning...

any help is appreciated
Greg

Greg, Type K is the right range. A case or sheath is reccommended since the bare wires can oxidize and will eventually the reading will start to drift. The best sheath is the 1/4 inch inconel. I have been using a couple of these for 10 years now. Depending on how you want to connect to the controller you may need an end connecter or plug. Are you going to use the PID controller to control the gas to forge? Or just for a temperture read out? . Not sure how that would work since my set up is with electric furnacne and a solid state relay for control. PHIL

Greg,

As Phil said you need a K type thermocouple. I had just recently bought an anologue pyrometer and with the instructions it talks about wire length. Basically it said you can use different length thermocouples and it will not effect the readout, but the wire needs to be the same length as originally supplied, using different wire length, type or gauge wire will require the pyrometer to be recalibrated. I don't know if that holds true for a digital units.
