I started coaching my son's football team this year as an Assistant Coach. Its been one of the most enjoyable things we've ever done together. He's played soccer before but there was nothing I could offer there except cheer leading from the side:D

He is loving it, and is improving everyday. I use to be Asst Coach of GWU's kickboxing team so I have coached before, and I played from 1st-12th grade. I lettered my sophomore year, but since I was year ahead and graduated when I was 17 I was really the same age as most Freshman. I was no all American by any stretch, but due to my passion, heart, smarts, and great technique I excelled. I got a letter from Naval Academy about playing ball, but it was likely more to my grades. I messed up my back my Junior year so nothing more ever came of it.

Anyway, this has been more fun than I ever imagined. I feel like I missed a calling in some regards. The kids are 8-9 yrs old and are a blast. I primarily work with all the defense and, the offensive line. I work hard during practice actually running the plays with the kids at each position. Im all over the field and the kids and parents love me which feels great. I find myself studying the game more than I have since high school. Games on TV seem to be more like study time now.

We had our first game this past Saturday and my son was picked by the Head coach as one of two Captains for his and our very first game. We smoked the other team 19-0. We really only missed one extra point attempt as the last touchdown was scored in the final seconds of the game on the last play so we didnt even attempt that one. My first time on the field, as the Head coach and I alternated defensive series, was 3 and out causing a fumble and recovering 3-4 yards deep to boot!

If any of you get the chance to help coach one of your kids games I highly suggest it. Its great on your parenting skills too cause you are center stage with the parents during practice and have to keep your cool. My patience has improved.

It also beats the heck out of sitting the sidelines and watching:thumbup:

I will be taking the good camera this week so hopefully will have better pics this next week of the game. Root us on. We have 5 games left:)

The helmets were done up real nice...even with a Tiger on it;):D

Good for you, T! Sounds like a great way to spend extra time with your son and get some exercise at the same time.

Yeah man its awesome! Funny thing some of the kids laugh at me cause Im usually sweating more than them. I told em yesterday, "THats Right. I sweat like a stuck pig!"

Savannah was there Monday watching and I set up a chute course with cones and had the kids crab through it. I got down and crabbed through it showing em how. When I had em end going straight through they had to rollover/tumble/summer salt whatever you call it at the end. THey looked at me and where like what we cant do that. So I did it to show em how and got a roar from the parents and other coaches:D

Savannah was like I didnt know you could do that!:D

Tons of fun:thumbup:

You'll be a great coach, Trevor!!!!!!!!!

Yes indeed. THe two of us have always been real tight as we are out numbered in our household:D

He's all I ever wanted and he will be a far better man than I.

especially since he has a lot of his mother in him, and if I can teach him everything I know... since I can show him where a lot of the pot holes and speed breakers are in life:thumbup:

and with that being said....I think Im gonna go over and have lunch here shortly with the two little ones at school:)

Just as soon as I complete a few chores:cool:

looks like someone needs Orange and Blue Sheaths :)
Very cool buddy.

That is great that you had the chance to be his coach, he will never forget that and neither will you. GO TIGERS! :D

You are at a very cool place, T. I'm happy for you and have great admiration for you, to take the time and make the commitment--you deserve all good things this will bring. I know you'll enjoy it "to the hilt".

All Best to you and yours.

Will

That's great Trevor! Hope you/they have a great season. I envoy your patience. My 8yo. started this year and the first few practices were the hardest things I've ever watched. But now it's pure joy.........Especially now that they're 5 and 0 and nobody has scored a point against them yet.:D
Go Tigers!

That sounds like a lot of fun, Trevor! You will do a great job, I am sure :D

It looks like you're already off to a great start! I bet your boy will have a blast with you as his coach. Thanks for sharing

That is great T. Nothing like some father/son time. Those are the memories he will carry with him forever.
