I started coaching my son's football team this year as an Assistant Coach. Its been one of the most enjoyable things we've ever done together. He's played soccer before but there was nothing I could offer there except cheer leading from the side
He is loving it, and is improving everyday. I use to be Asst Coach of GWU's kickboxing team so I have coached before, and I played from 1st-12th grade. I lettered my sophomore year, but since I was year ahead and graduated when I was 17 I was really the same age as most Freshman. I was no all American by any stretch, but due to my passion, heart, smarts, and great technique I excelled. I got a letter from Naval Academy about playing ball, but it was likely more to my grades. I messed up my back my Junior year so nothing more ever came of it.
Anyway, this has been more fun than I ever imagined. I feel like I missed a calling in some regards. The kids are 8-9 yrs old and are a blast. I primarily work with all the defense and, the offensive line. I work hard during practice actually running the plays with the kids at each position. Im all over the field and the kids and parents love me which feels great. I find myself studying the game more than I have since high school. Games on TV seem to be more like study time now.
We had our first game this past Saturday and my son was picked by the Head coach as one of two Captains for his and our very first game. We smoked the other team 19-0. We really only missed one extra point attempt as the last touchdown was scored in the final seconds of the game on the last play so we didnt even attempt that one. My first time on the field, as the Head coach and I alternated defensive series, was 3 and out causing a fumble and recovering 3-4 yards deep to boot!
If any of you get the chance to help coach one of your kids games I highly suggest it. Its great on your parenting skills too cause you are center stage with the parents during practice and have to keep your cool. My patience has improved.
It also beats the heck out of sitting the sidelines and watching:thumbup:
I will be taking the good camera this week so hopefully will have better pics this next week of the game. Root us on. We have 5 games left

The helmets were done up real nice...even with a Tiger on it

THis one was brand new so I am tickled to see he's scratching it up in the right spot

and a little Busse content to keep it cool
