My first post vise and 412lbs of 5" square HR4160. The post vise is only a 4" one, but it's in great condition. The 4160 was in one piece, but a friend cut it in half for me. That's two 206lb pieces at a little over 29" long. I will keep one piece for my knife anvil and sell the other one.
Went through my scrap stash this afternoon and I have enough stuff to build stands for the post vise and knife anvil.

Hey Mike! great find there. The vise looks to be like new.
Can you curl those bars?

Fred

Mike you be careful moving that heavy stuff around, them old bones take a while to heal:DGood looking vise you got there, take care--Butch

Dang. Thats sweet. Drive down with it and I'll feed you, supply beer, and trade you a knife.

I am very excited about this project. I will start working on the stand today.

Matthew, I have some one interested in the second piece. I should know something by Tuesday. When I do sell, it will be pick up only.

Fred, you have to be kidding. Heck, some mornings I can barely curl my fingers.

Butch, I am an expert on how long it takes old bones to heal, but thanks for the reminder.

Andy, thanks for your kind offer, but I am allergic to hops and I have some knives. :D

Sam, I probably will order the video, but for now I am going to use it as is. I will have to use my 9" side grinder to remove the saw marks. Heck, this thing weighs more than my mini mill. Handling a piece of this weight, is very difficult for me. I am thinking of drilling and tapping two holes for some 1/2" grade 8 bolts. No way can I drill a through hole.

Mike, you will get good performance from it as is, but I would highly suggest heat treating it, it will make a big difference in the rebound and save your arm alot of work.

I think that trying to heat treat that would be a chore and a half and almost impossible without making some specialized equipment. It might not be to bad to harden it, but to temper it would take one hell of a oven. :)
