They're fun to play with, but they're NOT toys!

I am an avid whittler. Cuts happen, it is a byproduct of choosing sharp edges as part of your hobby. I hope you heal well.

I was visiting a friend and playing with his LCC DA. I was chatting with him as I forcefully closed the blade ONTO THE TIP OF MY THUMB

I'll be sporting a band-aid and keeping my thumb stiff for quite some time.

Something in the knife karma on Saturday, I guess. Didn't take much force for my closing Spyderco Military (Brand new, razor sharp Forum special) to take the tip of my thumb off. Dontcha just hate bandaging the tip of a thumb?

Yeah, especially when you need that thumb for the spydie hole.

after i posted on this topic, i went out for a couple o'days with my gf. told her about the forum, and what i had put here. we laughed a bit.

well, wouldn't ya know it, i was open/closing my CRKT Point Guard, when i caught my thumbtip on the serrations, and made a nice clean, deep cut perp to the nail, and about 1/4" long. smart, very smart. actually, i didn't notice til i went to set the table and saw blood oozing out..not alot, but oozing.

she laughed at me, after showing a bit of concern. but, ya know, its only the second time in six years that i've cut myself...i'm sure ive got much worse coming to me...lol.

Well, not on Saturday, but a while ago, I did drop a Boker Applegate-Fairbairn combat knife on my foot while practicing grip changes, the kicker? I own the rubber practice knife! (should have used it)

I was the most chagrined person in the emergency room. (yes it did need stitches, that thing was sharp)

One does get comfortable with knives, here I was thinking only of my hands and arms... while my FEET were at risk.

Best,
Todd (edgedance)

One of 2 knife shows in our country. A Cold Steel representative is showing how their knives cut. Without gloves he holds the knife (Voyager) in his hand (blade down, edge pointing from him) and tries to stab into rusty car roof..... Guess what? The knife did not make it.... only his hand hits the roof.... and yes!!! the knife WAS very sharp....

I bet he wont try this again.

The index finger will be scarred, and I doubt the thumb (took the tip off) will ever grow back right

Owen, chances are your thumb will grow back, to a point where it will be hard to tell the difference (unless you put both your thumbs side by side for comparison).
I'm talking from personal experience here.

and just to show it does not matter if you are a professional or sober you can still do some might dumb things with a blade, my father a butcher was seperating frozen hamberger patties with one of his boning knives (a dexter russle safe - t + 8 inch job) it went thru the palm of his hand to the hilt as luck would have it it missed the veins and metacarpals but he had a bunch of stiches, he never again used his professional tools for such a prupose

I've cut myself a few times too and I have the scars to prove it - usually from being careless. Like any tool, a knife can be dangerous. Your should give your FULL attention to a knife when using it. We become so accustomed to handling them that we sometimes forget that they can cut us!

I suggest that you buy some cut resistant gloves. There are several kinds available - the the metal mail type available to butchers to knit kevlar used by surgeons and some whittlers and woodcarvers. Personally I have some of the knit kevlar cut resistant gloves and they are well worth the money - especially if you carve or whittle. They are available in sizes and are fairly comfortable.

Your survival knife is the knife you have on you when a survival situation arises.

Well,I suppose it was inevitable. With me reading all these posts about people cutting themselves you would think it would make me more careful.I sliced my right thumb open today. If you look at how long I`ve been hanging around here you might think,a guy like Carver, been hanging around all these knife nuts all this time, probably cut himself playing with his BM42 butterfly knife,or maybe he did it sharpening his Sifu,or,I know,I`ll bet he was wiping down his Civilian when it happened. If thats what you`re thinking you`d be wrong.I was washing a damn kitchen knife! And here`s the worst part.I did it with the only Cutco knife in the house!A damn Cutco for crying out loud!!Geez,I hope I don`t get banned for admitting this....
