I am looking for something thicker than usual. Something closer to the 0.5 inch thick Dan Keffeler monster chopper that Noss tested. Is there any knife maker, production or custom that makes a really thick chopping knife?

Thanks!

I think Himalayan Imports makes some kukris with spines that are a 1/2-in thick, or even more on special models...

+1 for Himalayan Imports. Check out the Chiruwa Ang Khola, the only knife I know covered under warranty for use as a prybar. Break one, you get two free!

Seriously, I like a good chopper as much as the next guy. :)

These are two that I had made. Both are in A2 steel, green micarta handles. The blade on the larger one is 10 inches long, .30 thick, 1.75 high. Amazing chopper.

I got a HI ganga ram here :http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/992060-Three-Blems-for-9-13
And gave initial impressions here:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/989208-Ganga-ram-22inch/page2

Now, that's almost 4 pounds of knife there. I really do suggest starting with a machete or a light chopper, getting technique down, then moving on to a heavier chopper. Swinging a big chopper safely and accurately is not something that you are going to get good at over night. Good luck on your search and let us know what you get.

Edit to add my Big Chris Custom GROB, around .300 thick 3V.....

Hey guys so I looked around and came back to this thread sometime later and really have not found anything. It seems like I'm going to have to get a knife maker to make me something custom. I'm looking for something at least 1/3 of an inch thick or thicker. Any ideas including custom knife makers?

I'm not that interested in a Khukri... prefer a straight bladed knife.

Thanks!!

Justin Gingrich. He has the technology. And he's a good guy as well as great maker.

I had two Busse at .32 thick.

Honestly, in big choppers, you don't need anything close to that thick. It becomes a point of greatly diminishing returns at about the .30 thick mark.

The weight starts going up quickly, and the chopping performance does not. Your ability to swing one, and importantly, check a swing if something goes wrong should be a consideration.

The "cool" factor is there, to a point.

Fair enough but its more for the indestructibility/durability factor that I want such a knife... and also the cool factor of course. Dan Keffeler's Monster knife is just so amazing to me. I have a decent amount of knives (like the BK9) so if this becomes just my occasional chopping use knife that's fine.

That was discontinued long ago, due to people abusing the warranty.

I really love the thickness of that blade but I am not interested in a Kukri design. I am looking for a straight (or nearly straight) bladed knife.

They don't make only khukuri. They make many other styles as well. In many size ranges.
Khukuri, Swords, Parang, Bowies, Hunting knives.....etc....
