The width of the edge shoulders is affected by the angle of the edge, so it would help to include that measurement. As you make the edge more acute, the width of the edge shoulders will grow on most knives. My experience with factory edges is that they come in a lot of different angles, usually not evenly ground.
So, for example, You might get a 15 dps factory edge on one knife and measure 0.027 inches behind the edge. While another model with a 20/22 dps edge angle will measure 0.020 behind the edge. If you measure only the width of the edge shoulders, you'll be misled into thinking the second knife is a better slicer.
Are you guys just interested in production knives? Or could sprint runs be included?
What exactly is this "thickness behind the edge" you guys are referring to?![]()
I'm interested in how much variation there is within models. I picked up a second southard recently, and it is extremely thin behind the edge - much more so than the first one I have (but I don't have calipers to measure). Has anyone else had examples of the same model with significant differences in the grind thickness?

I don't have the appropriate tools to measure it myself, but does anyone know the thickness behind the edge on the Domino?
I just got a Domino (BBS version) and I swear it's one of the thinnest ground Spydercos I've ever had. I like it.
Now I'm thinking about asking Big Chris to hook my Manix 2 up with a similar grind, but I'd like to know the exact specs so I can provide to him.
Can anyone give me some blade thickness measurements on the Domino?
Are the specs the same on the regular production Domino as they are on the BBS exclusive version? (I'm guessing they would be, but you never know...)
Whoops, can't believe I missed it
Thanks calc
Stretch
Base: 0.023"
Middle: 0.023"
Tip: 0.025"
Seems odd to me that this would be uniform throughout the belly and tip. Might just be a nice distal taper, but we'll see. I'll verify tomorrow when I have clearer eyes. Regardless, this has been my EDC the past week and might be for a while. Cuts very nicely.

Thicker than Stretch ZDP... similar to Brock O Lee's Calys in the same two steels.
Very interesting thread CalcOne primary blade style I see a lot with more than average thickness close to the cutting edge are many of the full flat grind models that Spyderco blesses us with. It's not a problem with me at all because I just simply grind in the proper relief or in an extreme case and I've had a couple over the years I just go ahead and reprofile it completely.
Also I've found that many of the plain edged Spyderco Hawkbills have more than average thickness close to the cutting edge as well and they can be quite a chore to get them right again. I've only had one Recurve and maybe one Reverse S style blade with too much shoulder but thankfully they are kind of rare.
This is an interesting subject and one I haven't heard talked much about.
