Thickness Issue

Thick for collecting, thin for using.

All of the designated users in my collection have one thing in common. Each is the thinnest available in a given knife design. (Standard AD, ZT SH, ZT NO, ABLE, Leaner Meaner, Etc.)

The only exception is my standard BM truck knife, at 1/4". My car knife is a ZT SH.

I cannot imagine a realistic task that my thin users cannot perform.

To carry the extra steel I would either have to sacrifice other useful stuff, or accept that I was going to become tired more quickly, and neither of these options are acceptable for me.

That is a good way to look at it.

IIRC Skunk said that a FSH out performed a SHBM or a BM-E in chopping on a trip he was on. I'm assuming that the FBM will be a step above any of these when it comes out.

I guess I really like the idea of the thicker blade but the .25" version will surely surpass anything I would ever put it through or need it for.

This being said I will stop agonizing over the decision of whether to get the 1/4" or the 5/16" version. :D

1/4" thick blade with one of Leatherman's Kydex/Leather fusion sheaths for my needs.

Thin plus one of Dwayne’s fusion sheaths: my favorite combo.

i come from the 3/4" thick super saylan state of mind, so much of what is said here seems funny coming from that perspective. 1/4" to me in a chopping blade can be seen as tiny compared to the monsters i want.

a 1/2" battle mistress with a tapered tang is one of my dreams. never gonna happen - but i'd love to have one. i'd like to see a 3/4" version as well. i think the handle can do for that kind of weight and not suffer to much in ergonomics.

now that i've been working with 2x4's, i can handle my 30" ang khola (while i still have it :( ) with one hand, and that thing is 5.5 lbs at 30" long, and 1/2" thick. a 1/2" thick battle mistress would be cake.

obviously camping is different - but for home use i would love to have one in a much thicker configuration for chopping and splitting ability.

your 30 inch AK is only 1/2 inch? My 18 inch AK is thicker than that. True though when you think of the HI AK's everything else seems small by comparison. However, these are strictly chopppers and they create enough momentum that you need to worry about stopping them. Randals Iron Mistress is 3/8 inch thick. And I think the Lile Rambo knife was thicker than 1/4 inch as well.

I still don't see a need for anything thicker than around 1/4 inch, except the cool factor. But looks aren't everything. This is a tough one.

But you do sacrifice speed and dexterity when you get thicker, there is no doubt about that.

i've found that most of sher's work ends up being 1/2". i wanted thicker on all of them, but was happy with what i got. with a knife that is above 1/4", for the most part speed and dexterity arent an issue for me. i'll be using them as a heavy heavy chopper, or of a substitute splitting maul. and to some degree - a great deal of dexterity and speed can be gained from working out with heavier objects, like extended length 2x4's or 4x4's. its amazing how fast a knife feels in the hand after you've used a 4' 2x4 for 15 minutes.

with infi, thickness for added use as a prybar pretty much stops being an issue after 1/4. so the main focus i have with it is adding weight behind the edge, and getting more of a splitting effect when getting deeper into wood. chances are i'd never use them as a knife - just like i'd never use any of my khukuries as a knife (even though it could be done. the edge simply isnt the kind of geometry i look for in a cutting tool, but is fine for a chopper. on a 1/2" thick battle mistress, i'd being the edge down to 18 degrees, possibly less)

i personally would not want a 1/2" thick natural outlaw - because for me it would be defeating the purpose of the extra material since it wasnt long enough to use it in momentum like you would with a battlem mistress. i would ask for a tapered tang because of how much metal is in the handles of the new fusion line - wich directly effects the balance of adding so much material. a good pound of it ends up in you hand and behind it.

I agree that if designed right a 3/8 inch busse would be cool, but it would definitely have to have a tapered tang to reduce the unnecessary weight
