Thin or Thick...

One of each. Like you Hogs would not buy---one of each!! (WHERE'S MY GAME WARDEN!!!!!!)

For a smaller knife like the AD or GW .125-.140 is plenty strong for me.

For larger knives like the Battle Mistress I prefer them to be at least 3/16-1/4 thick.

I never pry with my knives so I never see a need for thick. 10-20 dollar Crowbars do a much better job at prying.

Some people like the feel of a nearly indestructible knife and there is nothing wrong with that. I tend to prefer to give up some heft for a more optimized weight to suit my personal needs.

Luckily, Busse has a wide selection of both thick and thin so there is something for everyone.

It is not very likely that we will see a one knife only scenario. If the $hit hits the fan....the one knife that you have will most likely be the one you are carrying. If we have time to get to our stash to pull out the thicker and bigger knife then I doubt that any of us will only pull one piece of INFI ;)

+1

I think grind angle, grind height and height of blade are all worthy factors in considering thickness.

I actually am fine with an AD up to about the 0.17" thickness. But, I do appreciate satin smaller knives in the 0.125" - 0.15" thickness range as well.

Mid-sized 5.0" - 7.5" blades from 0.17" - 0.22" depending on grind.

And large choppers around 0.25" thick +/- depending on grind.

IMO and for my purposes - Knives are 99% for cutting not prying.

If 99% of the use of a knife is for cutting, I would rather focus 99% of the over-all knife towards cutting ability, design, comfort and feel in hand, carry, etc.

IMO, the above sized blades and thicknesses perform very well for my uses.
I am not hard fast on all knives being within the above ranges. But, I feel those are pretty reasonable ranges.

IMO, a 0.32" thick Game Warden is a Novelty. I don't own one, but I am sure they are fun to look at and use as paper-weights. Not so great a tool unless you need a VERY expensive sharpened stubby railroad spike for some reason. I can't think of a good use for it personally. But, maybe somebody else can.  Some people like and collect many other types of very expensive novelty items. So, no doubt, a 0.32" Game Warden has certain value to some.
I have a fairly nice Katana that I doubt I will ever use. But, I enjoy owning it. So goes passion for collecting things.

I understand and appreciate the need and ability for knives to be able to handle some lateral torque or light prying for batoning or many types of use. But, for the given sizes, many other steels are plenty strong enough in reasonable thickness for any lateral torque I need for those given sized knives - So, INFI is Plenty strong.

I think a lot of this knife thickness thing comes down to "practical factor" vs. "Cool factor".

I have some knives in my collection based more on "Cool factor". So, I can appreciate "Cool Factor". But, I much "prefer" my knives to be made and designed well for their intended use.

The "worthy" knives for me are the ones I am willing to "CARRY" into the field and use. And knives that will perform well when I use them.

If you are not going to carry it out into the field, then why justify trying to make a knife do a job in place of much better suited and much cheaper tools?

I prefer using the right tool for the job - axes, crow bars, etc. all do their intended jobs much better and are MUCH cheaper.

In the end, to each their own I guess. Whatever makes you happy and all.

I bought a Cultie Satin blade w/ tan micarta at a recent Ganza. It is way to thin for my taste. Doesn't seem like much of a knife for the price. I will probably sell it on Ebay and by a GW or AD.

I'll be able to tell you for sure in a couple of days when the wife's BAD gets here, but at this point, I like them fat. Not from a performance point of view, but from an ergonomic point of view; fat Busses feel better in my hand.

Both thick and thin! Plus everything in-between. :D

I love the AD in all it's thicknesses!

My wife really loves the ADs...I can take them or leave them, except for one little problem....every time my wife holds one, she gets this look in her eye...the look that says "I married you, why can't I stab you?"

I guess if I'm getting stabbed with it I def prefer a thin blade over a fat one, but really, I'd like to just avoid getting stabbed. I bet I can trade/sell off all my ADs pretty easy like, I just need something new to distract the wife with....Hmmmmm

i like the fatty game warden, but i don't like the grind.....

i don't mind the thickness, even if it is a bit thick for such a small knife.....

however, i think that the fatty GW would've been a much better overall design if it came with a nice full height hollow grind.....

that would allow it to retain its thickness, while having a thinner edge for greater slicing ability....

Some Off Duties have full height hollow grinds.....excellent slicers!

Agreed, although we probably wouldn't have scored them for around $200 bucks though if they were hollow ground ;)

very true....and if we did want a hollow grind, we could always send it to the custom shop, randucci, or ban to get the work done....

I like the inherent strength of a full flat grind as opposed to a hollow grind. You have to give up a little in slicing cross-section or strength no matter which one you choose and I have learned here to never give up strength. However, I will not be giving up any of my hollow grinds because of this obvious 'flaw.' :p
