Things that dont realy work

Agreed. They do work as advertised but they also take much more effort, time, and calories than simply igniting quality tinder using a firesteel.

Man, if you're counting calories from five minutes of filing on a rather soft magnesium bar, you would be in bad shape anyway. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but damn, we're not lifting weights here. :D

That said, my own kit is redundant with firestarting methods. Matches, disposable lighters, firesteel, 0000-steel wool, fresnel lens, short lenghts of fatwood, and 5-10 tinder cubes are in ALL of my (3) survival kits.

I am a big believer in The Department of Redundancy Department as well. :D

Many cheap crappy overprice stuff from china, they can be down right dangerous at times or fall apart on you after a couple of times. Things that look high speed low drag i.e. tactical looking gear, not all but most are just overprice flash in the pants. Messenger bags, I know its the latest and greatest fad, but heck people back everything in those things and they put ore weight on one side hit your hip, rub against your body etc..+1 for non deet, I would like to point out that if you do get deet products make sure that you get the 3m product where the deet in such away that it cannot be absorb through intact skin.

2 things that don't work well (for me):

1. Fine motor skills when I'm cold. If the muscle group in question is smaller than a tennis ball, I have trouble controlling it. Makes things interesting, to say the least when trying to get warm.

2. My left hand. Dadgum thing is just plain stupid, no matter how much I train it. If I ever sprain my right hand/wrist/elbow in the woods, I'm in trouble!

It isn't a certain one item, however anytime I go out with only one way to start a fire, it just happens to fail one way or another.

But if I go out the next day with 2 ways, and try the same that failed the day before, it works fine =/

Useless things....Me!!:D

But seriously knowledge is key as well as knowing ones own abilities. I have recently started to rehone my survival abilities and relearn tecniques. Having knowledge of many different ways to just start a fire can make a difference.
