Things that hurt.....

The recent post on safety equipment has me thinking of things that really hurt. Some for me have been:

Slag landing perfectly on my eye lid, and staying a while (i mean yellow hot slag shooting from under the hammer).

Running your thumb into a fresh 36 grit belt thats moving at 5000+/- s.f.m.

Picking up a blade from the forge that has just lost its color, and you forgot you took your hot gloves off.

These are a few that have happened to me, lets hear some toe curlers from out there.

Ouchies:

+ Cutting-off/mangling two fingers (not a bad thing cuz' I'm a heckuva drinking glass washer and I throw a mean fastball
biggrin.gif
)
+ Sanding an oak shaft for a putter while it was still spinning on the lathe, using a band of belt sand-paper...belt got caught and wrapped my thumb around the shaft ...backwards....good thing the oak broke first..
+ Drilling a micarta block without clamping it down and having it spin into my knuckles

....seems like no matter how safe we think we are, we still make mistakes...

I think the drill press gets me the most! Especially with titanium.....next is my 2hp grinder with 40 grit on board!

and then theres those titanium sparks

grabbing a hot knife is NO fun either.....I HATE getting burned...it is the worst pain on this planet....except for a broken heart

Finally, a topic I know about!!!
biggrin.gif

1. Respirators are good. it sucks inhaling micarta, dymondwood, metal dust. it kinda burns when you sneeze.

2. Drill press, several here.
a. those damn little corkscrew thingies are sharp and hot!
b. have you ever seen a blade spin?
c. ever try to catch that spinning blade?
d. hot metal..one of my faves!
smile.gif

e. Rapid Tap cutting fluid can get hot and splatter...dont ask!

hacksawing:
steel gets hot and is jagged..not a good combo! When the blade snaps and you smash your fingers on the metal, which due to Murphy's law, is hot and jagged.

Dremel..ever see those cut off wheels shatter? thank god for the face mask!

making handles. Never try to brush away the stuff you just filed..lots of splinters hiding there! Got a big bocote splinter right under my nail. Not too happy!

Grinders:
a. hot steel in the hand sucks.
b. Hot metal dust is worse! Anyone else ever get their dust pile glowing?
c. The smell of paint melting off of the platen/workrest
d. the smell of steel burning and turning purple
e. holding onto purple steel still
f. edge of belts hurt...40 grit 977 on a grizzly..not a pretty combo. i've been safe with the trizacts so far!
g. profiling a handle shape and trying it out before it cools down.

polishing...buffers are dangerous! thats why I dont use them!

Most dangerous thing...parents that sneak up on you when you are grinding...everything is going nice, then your parents are right besides you, then they say something and you jump, blade gets fubar'd. Almost happened a few times, but the blade was bad anyway!
biggrin.gif

Second most dangerous thing: Pictures of people with smoke coming out of their bum or of certain rodents with big teeth and bloodthirsty tendencies! hmmm..wonder who that could be!

Hey Matt....

How about Resheathing an Extremely sharp tipped Hawkbill, and completely missing the sheath, embedding the blade about 1/4" or more into your thumb ?

Would that qualify ????

Did it this morning!! LOL OUCH !!

OK, Ok, Ok, I have treasured memories\scars of most all so far mentioned - But here is the piece de rustiness. How about cleaning up the ol 1" cable in preparation for welding and sliding a single wire up under the ol narled thumbnail? Feels so good going in - even better coming out, but truly, sexually, ecstatic for days after. Its kinda like Naval aviation safety, waste time hearing about it, save time averting it, and when Mr. Murphy calls, expend wasted time finding someone else to blame.

Taz talked about being startled from behind while grinding.....try this instead.

Make it a rule for your visitors to flip the lights on and off a couple of times before talking to you....it's a great warning mechanism....

How about this...you are making a real nice sheath and are sewing it together with one of them needles that look more like nails. You push it through and it goes right in your finger(not fun although people around you will think soo..

Over the summer I had a Mole Cricket fly up inside my Gym shorts while I was grinding !! They got those damn sharp front claw things and he started digging with them as soon has he couldn't fly any farther..... This was right against my PRIVATES
eek.gif

I just about did a back flip off my chair... Cooling bucket, saftey glasses, dust mask and knife blade went flying!!!!!
I stood back up, shook the mother F er out of my shorts and stomped the shizit out of him!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I've done a number of the above. My best(?)memory is of the time I had a 3/64 drill running close to my drill press table and I decide to brush chips from under it before I drill the next liner hole. Well it grabbed the fingernail on my middle finger and pulled it up the bit. I'm tryng to pull it off to no avial until I get it together enough to turn off the machine. I think the Japanese tortured people like this : )

I was slackbelting a blade one time on my square wheel. Had the bright idea of putting on a workglove to push up against the underside of the belt to try and remove some stubborn scratches. Funny thing is I remember thinking I better be careful not catch my pinky finger between the belt and the top contact wheel. About 2 seconds later, sure enough, the pinky finky, my middle finger and ring finger got caught up in the belt. I crushed my kneecap a while back. It didn't hurt nearly as much as this. Felt like they were pulled off at the roots.

having a stack of blades come back from heat treat and the holes had shrunk in cryo, so i was redrilling them with out a glove and no clamp whisleing away till the last one that i placed blade toward my hand, and sure enought hot shavings landed on my right hand and the blade spun around slicing my index finger 2 1/2" to the bone! ouch! i did get a compliment for the doctor at the E.R you make great knives Mr. segal this is a fine surgical cut! LOL

Hey Rhino, had to laugh at your post. Same thing happened to me. About two inches, starting from the base of my left thumb heading towards to my wrist. The Doc said he couldn't have done a better job himself. I was so proud!

Im with you . The eyelid when forging is a very painfel hurt.

The grinder with the 40 grit belt is way up there on my list.

Super gluing you fingers to something and ripping them off is another not so nice situation.

Tom your story about the guy getting hung up with the 6' chuck reminded me of a bad one:

About 10 years ago when i was active duty Coast Guard, we had a mayday call. We arrived on scene to find a poor fisherman that somehow got cuaght up in his trawl winch. It pulled him about 1/2 way in through the spool before another deck hand hit the switch.

This was one of the many humbling sights in my life.

Thats kind of off topic, but this isnt- Remember the most important piece of safety equipment is between your ears. (im saying this to remind myself

Have long since sanded away the stitching on the thumb on my left glove si I decided to just tape them up and it worked great untill last night when the tape caughtsome of that hot metal shavings and burned through and on to my thumb. Or when I put a freshly ground chisel tanto in a drill press vise to file the choil and was making a jesture with my hand and brought my right thumb up against the point. The worst part of that one is I was at Chris Christman's (Top of Texas) shop and his wife had to bandage me up .

I remember painfully when I first started heat treating, I lost the grip on a knife on the way to the quench. 1500 degree's of steel in my kneecap.4 stitches and 300 dollars later I'm fine but learned my lesson. Dave

It hurts again to write this. A couple years ago, while changing the belt on my old BladeMaster grinder, the tensioning spring broke. That grinder is comprised of a square shaft inside another square shaft, held apart by that tensioning spring.

When the spring broke, the fleshy part of the palm of my left hand was pinched between the two shafts as they slammed together and was basically sheared off. A piece of skin about 1-1/2" x 1" was left lying on the floor with the fat layer up, with that same dimension of exposed flesh on my hand. That hurt a bunch. Putting it under the faucet and running water over it hurt more, and having the nurse pour peroxide on it and clean it off some hurt a whole lot.
