Things that make you say HUH?

That is the sole reason I didn't bid/buy that one.

There are proper ones out there I believe. Perhaps one of the 300 series gurus will set the record straight.

If it's what I think it is.. If I recall correctly that was added later on. That's the original. The OG, haha.

I thought it was allways in there. .Can it still be spoken in school?

Yes, this was the original wording of our pledge. I would have to go back and find when this wording changed but from memory, the 'under God'
was added a few years after WWII. In 1954. DM

You are correct! I knew it had to do with the Russians and the Cold War, but I thought it was added much later on than '54.

Well, David spilled the beans. Yes, 'under god' is missing from the text as we know it today but as David points out, those two words were not added until 1954. The pledge has a complicated and interesting history of different variations so if you care to read more check it out on Wikipedia.

Here is one interesting tidbit from wiki...political correctness is not an absolute but varies with the times.
Bellamy designed it to be recited in 15 seconds. As a socialist, he had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity but decided against it, knowing that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans.

i was figuring buck was under pressure even back in 85 to be pc a bit. didnt consider older version of the pledge. only knew the under god version i was taught and said everyday in school, etc.

If you don't remember when the change was made, you are too young. If you do remember, you are too old.

Bert

EDIT: In case anyone wonders, I am in the second group.

I think they quit saying the Pledge of Allegiance sometime in the 1970's. About the same time they quit the school prayer.
(Praying in school still goes on ... every time there is a test or pop quiz the students silently pray they don't fail it.)

The version can depend on the school too. My daughter went to pre-school in a church by our house and they said the version most of us are used to. The past two years she's been in public school and they use the version that on that knife box.

no Sir. said pledge every day until late 80s early 90s when i finished school. didnt stop in the 70s in florida and we always said under god.

I was in grammar school when they made the change and half the class would recite the new and half the old.

I also remember when the only time you heard the Star Spangled Banner was when the black and white TV stations started broadcasting at 6:00 in the morning and when they shut down at midnight.
