Things to do in CA?

Even in town there are a few places to explore and hike. Take the trails around the headland right by the Golden Gate Bridge, and I always liked the spot down on the water by Cliff House (or rather, where Cliff House used to be) and the site of the Sutra Baths. Go to Ocean Beach. Fly a kite at Crissy Field. Visit the Maritime museum just below Ghirardelli Square. Visit Fort Point (one of my favorite spots there, it is a Civil-war era fort under the Golden Gate bridge). If you can get transportation across the Golden Gate, go up the drive to the WWII-era coast defense gun emplacements on the headlands overlooking the Golden Gate, and then drop on down to the Point Bonita lighthouse.

And if you can hook up with a forumite there, by all means go on a hike in the surrounding areas. There are a number of good places to go in the coast range and in redwood groves.
.

Yup, there's tons of good stuff along the ocean side of the SF peninsula, from Ocean beach to across the Golden Gate Bridge with the Headlands, Muir Woods/Beach, and even up to Stinson Beach and Palomarin Beach (though they're a bit harder to get to via public trans). If you don't end up meeting with anyone here, you'll still have lots of options to fill a couple of days, even if only in the city.

When you are in Southern California, check out Medieval Times in Buena park. Nothing like eating dinner while grown men whack each other with swords!

While in San Francisco, never call it "Frisco" -that's how we can tell the tourists from the locals.

You have to see some of the sights that makes SF so very "special":
1. Take a walk down Haight Street, if you can, eat at "Cha Cha Cha's" one of the best eclectic Tapas restaurant around. http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/903991
2. Go to Polk street and have your picture taken under the giant Rainbow flag.
3. Eat at North Beach and visit the UFO Museum

My first post on this forum - kind of a strange place to start on a blade forum, but here we go anyway -
I live in Irvine, near Newport Beach - the first thing I'd recommend is that you check the weather for both Nor Cal and So Cal before your trip - the difference can be summer and winter - so pack accordingly. Irvine and OC have pretty poor public transit, so a rental car is highly suggested. OC is famous for Disneyland, Beaches and snooty people - don't believe the hype, not everybody is bad here. The county is realitivly gun friendly, I can't speak for knives, but I'd say you'll probably stick out like a sore thumb if you're strapped with a FB on your hip. I carry an Emerson in my pocket almost everyday and have never had any issue with that. I wouldn't carry it into any kind of amusement parks, they're pretty touchy about that stuff.
As far as things to do - there are some great people watching venues - I think someone already mentioned South Coast Plaza (also a decent knife shop there), Fashion Island in Newport, Laguna Beach is a great place to spend an afternoon (I think its the nicest beach in Cal) and is fairly pedestrian friendly - you can walk from the beach and around the town easily. Other Beaches are Huntington, Newport and Dana Point - they're all pretty nice, but with different feel to each - some are more Surfer oriented, others tend to have more families, other more couples, etc. They're all about 45 min from top to bottom of the list - just drive down PCH (a nice trip in itself).
If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line and I'll do my best to help.

Popndrop is right, each of those beaches definitley do have their on unique feel. If you do have the chance to go up or down PCH it will be worth you time. Welcome to the forum popndrop!

wow you guys are really going to make me go broke out in CA..."eat here...go there..see this.." :D I'm really excited to get out there and the TAD gear looks awesome. I'm sure I could spend all day just looking through TAD and REI, and get some soup at Pier 39.
RKSoon, I sent you an email!
Thanks for all the replies, this is far more info I could get looking through some stupid travel brochure.

I dont know if it was mentioned but there is also Angels Island. Its an island park that was left pretty natural. There is hiking and wildlife. You have to take a ferry to get there. North beach has great italian food and lots of gentlemen's clubs. It is also an easy walk to China Town. The museum/aquarium in golden gate park was just renovated and would probably be a good way to spend a day. Muir woods and Mt Tamalpias are in Marin county. A car would prob be necessary to get there. There used to be a place that offered ultra-light airplane rides around the bay. Sony has a mall like center called the Metrion(sp?) if you like video games. I think there is an Imax too. There is also an aquarium at Peir 39 and Alcatraz prison. I would look on line before you go, for discount tickets or coupons for the things you want to check out.

Sorry to say there isnt much fishing going on but someone might be running some trips in the bay for stripers and halibut.

Have fun Matt
