So...the maintenance guy has just cut down a substantial chunk of bamboo or cane...not real sure which. I am probably gonna use some of it for fishing poles. Any other good outdoor/survival uses?

How big/thick is it?

The couple of pieces I snagged are about 12' and start about 5/8" at the base and taper to next to nothing.

I cut a few that are about 5-1/2' long and 5/8" dia.

There's plenty more but I have to work soon and can't be gettin all nasty cuttin it out...

Good catch, IUKE. I forgot all about the fire saw. I've also seen it done with a long piece of bamboo and instead of placed on the ground, it's held on a down angle to the ground, and the tinder is held in place on the backside with a shaving of bamboo held by your other hand.

Another use for a section of bamboo is as a primitive liquid holder. The joint forms the bottom end and you cap of the upper end with a cork or equiv.

Doug's question suggests an idea. Maybe later in the year, when things start to grow again, we can do a thread(s) listing all the uses for a specific plant. I've already started working on one for Teasel (Dipsacus sylvestris) which is a very ubiquitous plant.

Uses so far? - hand drill for friction fire
- lightweight trap parts
-inspirator for coaxing reluctant fires and for burning out spoons
-small container for tinder
-part of a small fish gaff

I second the bow idea. I still have a bundle bow around here somewhere made of small diameter bamboo that's held up for years.
