Things to know before getting first tattoo?

I've never gotten a tattoo, but have thought about it. Sterile shop, make sure you really want it, because if you don't want it, you can get it removed, but it will hurt like hell, and leave a mark.

Here's a piece of experience i learned the hard way...never insist the artist honor his appointment on superbowl sunday...the 'yinyang' on my wrist looks ghetto, the only tat that scarred up (badly) on me. I mean, who watches football anyhow??? :D

For me, these things have worked excellently:

1. Ask your friends where they went....word of mouth is vital sometimes.

2. Check out shops in your area, and an artists work book.

3. Watch an artist at work and observe the shops cleanliness.

4. Ask the artist how long he's been 'tooing, most will show off their work proudly.

5. Find out if they'll do touch-ups free up til 30 days.

6. Care after the work is done and IF problems arise.

7. Cost per work, or per hour.

8. Final design has artist copyright if custom done(in other words will NOT use on anyone else).

9. Approve design BEFORE the work starts.

10. Be sure YOU like it ...colors, design, and placement before it's started, because YOU have the final say....and also it will be w/ you for the rest of your life.

IF you can meet all these, bring your ideas or pics in and work w/ an artist who can give you the work of art you want. Good luck and enjoy.:D

i got a deal on mine years ago-
shop opened down the street-went past every day and night never saw a body inside-on the way back from the barber on saturday i stopped in -
turns out the guy has a history doing work and just closed his shop near the airbase in rome ny- went by the name of "mountain"- guy was 4-5 times bigger than me at least-lol-

picked what i liked and colors i wanted(tribal before it became a rage)-
guy didnt want to do the colors said the design was for a single color because its a mexican jail house pattern or something, showed me some in his book, all huge and on peoples backs, and all black-

said ok and started to walk out-so he says ok ill do it but if you dont like it there is no fixing for free-had it made small enough to fit on my arm and done with 3 colors- he gave me half off when he was done and took a photo for the cover of his book-still has good color after 15 plus years-

biggest advice i could give is keep it clean and cover it with antibiotic ointment-not vasalene and no clear platic wrap-

seen some bad scaring becuase of bad care after a good job
