Im going on a long hike with my dad and brother this weekend and I dont want to get bored when Im up there.
Some of the things Im planning to try to make is an elevated shelter, a bow and arrow, several mechanical traps and snares (just for fun, so I wont leave them set), and I might try to make a chair as well. And Ive given some thought into boomerang construction also.
Ive thought about making things like baskets, bowls and spoons, but they are not interesting to me personally.

What are some of the things you have crafted in the woods?

Geez, that's an awful lot of projects for one hike. :)

I always enjoy a good fire. Between that and wandering around in the woods, taking pictures of everything, I think I could be entertained for the rest of my life.

When I was a kid (13 or so) I went on a couple of week-long canoe trips in Maine (Alagash and St John rivers).

On one of the trips, the guys running the show forgot one of the duffel bags containing all the cooking and eating utensils and the toilet paper(!). It wasn't discovered until the drop-off ride had left, so the guy who forgot the duffel was sent into the nearest town (a 20 mile hitchhike each way -- he caught a ride with a logging truck) to get a skillet and some toilet paper.

In the mean time, the rest of us sawed plates from a log and I found a tin can that we flattened out and attached to a stick to serve as a spatula. After some discussion among the kids we decided that anything you can eat with a fork you can eat with a spoon, so we all whittled ourselves spoons. We used roundish rocks to smooth out the spoons, which made them a lot more pleasant to use.

We couldn't have had more fun if they'd done it on purpose. I've since sometimes wondered if it wasn't a set-up, but if it was, they probably would have 'remembered' a skillet.

I would suggest traps, walking staff and a cup or bowl. The traps will take time and concentration and the staff could be done at an afternoon break and the cup or bowl would be around the campfire.

Sit down toilet,with a view!

Careful if you try knapping, take a piece of leather to work it on, otherwise you will slice up your clothes! A thin pair of leather gloves may be useful too!

I agree!

this isnt my idea but i like it good way to pass time and make a gift floss and a stick and make a dreamcatcher practice knots and pass time:thumbup:

on my last week long hunt/camp i worked on my bow, collected arrows, found a ton of chert, and spent some time knapping under a tarp shelter during the big rainstorm..... ill be putting in more work on the bow and knapping on my next weekend trip....

When it gets dark and your sitting around the campfire you can always burn a bowl out.

I am curious if anyone has ever crafted a boomerang. It is something I have been wanting to try for a while now, but just haven't gotten around to giving it a go.

Funny, echo4v, I was thinking the same thing.

As for me, like a bear, I make doo-doo in the woods.

:D

I apologize, but I just couldn't help myself and you know I wasn't the only one thinking it!
