Things you used to hate about knives, but now love

I used to hate big folders. anything over a 3" blade. now half of what i have are over 3"

Patina, simple knives, "traditional knives", and some rust on blades used to bother me so much, that I would stop carrying it even at the sight of surface dots.
A while ago (years) a knife had to look cool, AND be functional.
Now it has to be functional, and i could care less about look. I tend to like the look more when it functions better. :D

About 10 yrs ago a 2 1/2" - 2 3/4" blade folder was the maximum length I would carry. Over the last several years I've to learned to embrace larger folders like the Endura & Para-Military. I now Love the 3"-4" blades as long as they are thin enouigh to be really good slicers.

Thin blades. I used to hate knives with thin slicing blades. I wanted beefy thick blades. Well.... I eventually found I gravitated to the knives in my collection that sliced better. Guess what, they were all thinner bladed knives.

Grizz

I've always loved thin blades. Given that many machetes are only 1mm thick and they hold up to heavy chopping, durability really isn't an issue as long as the knife isn't given an overly hard heat treatment. And I used to be all about high hardness but now prefer a more moderate, springy HT.

I used to hate all Spyderco knives because I thought they were ugly. Now I see the beauty in many of them.
I understand the value of well-done fully-serrated blades now.
I now appreciate automatic knives for how cool they are, and wish they weren't illegal in my state.

lanyards. still gravitate towards pocket clips instead, but I now appreciate that in some cases a lanyard can be a pretty sweet thing to have on a knife

The spyderco lum. I thought it was the most ridiculous looking knife ever! I hated the huge wide fat blade. I now own one and absolutely love it. Things change as well as age, and time.

I used to like combo blades (carried a combo Delica for many, many years) and tantos (until I bought one).

I still have the Delica, but don't carry it much. Finally got rid of the tanto- it had a combo blade, too. :)

Edit: Oops- guess I got this backwards.

I used to hate tip up until I discovered deep clips and tip up. I used to feel like the knife got in my way when I put my hand in the front pocket. A Spyderco UKPK helped me get over that. I also used to like partially serated but now prefer plain edge or full spyderedge.

Nothing still hate holes in blades for opening, partially serrated edges and pinned construction and always will
