Check out the owning the kills initiative November challenge thread... Its everyone using a ferro Rod with natural tinder... TO get wood havings (or craping actually to light) Ferro Rods Work they just take some practice.. One trick that tonym showed me that I find works well is to actuall place the firesteel on the tinder (smash the tinder down with the end of the steel, than strike down the legth of the steel.. THis helps focus and direct the sparks in to a specific area.

to me the LMF firesteel throws some good sparks, but they don't last too long, not long enough to get the fire going. I have some other ones that work a bit differently, they seem to throw little pieces of molten metal, and not just sparks. With this type of firesteel I can get a fire started in almost any condition.
Don't know the difference between them, but I`m sure someone here knows.

LMF does work. It just takes technique. Make sure you're not just flicking it to produce little sparks, but trying to carve a bit off, as this results in a nice hot shower of sparks that will ignite good natural tinder.
