I am looking for a defensive shorter barrel'd 12-gauge, and I would like a semi-auto (is a pumb easier to maintain?), I would like sights (more than just a front bead) or a sight rail too. I have decided this way because I have 2 handguns and no long guns. I think I could swing arroung the $1100 range as a max, I was thinking a new Kimber CDP II Pro. Any Recomendations?

I recommend the Winchester SX2 Practical, or the FN equivalent (which has a shorter barrel, I think).

They're reliable and they recoil as softly as a Remington 1100/11-87, and they cycle faster than a Benelli M1S90.

you're buying both the handgun and a shotgun?

if you want to spend 1100.00 on a shotgun, there are several i would recommend you look at.

remington 870: simple, reliable, easily maintained, many available accessories.
remington 1187: basically an auto version of the 870.
benelli: pricier, but quality guns.

the benefit of a pump is it will take any ammo. autos may have problems firing light recoil rounds.

as far as bbl length, i think all are offered in 18". (in ca anything shorter is probably illegal and class 3).

at home i have a stoeger coach gun w/20" bbl. still much shorter than the others because there is no action.

I think I will go with the shotty right now and add to my collection rather than get antoher pistol. How about maintainance between semi-auto and pump?

I have a Mossberg Persuader shotty that I LOVE. I have had mine for many years.

just get a good old 870 and you can dress it up with all the goodie you could think of for well under 1100 imo.

Hard to beat the tried and true Remington 1100. I would set it up with a 22 inch barrel (allows for a longer magazine extension) and ghost ring sights. My personal preference is for a thumbhole stock as well. Just like anything it does require maintenance but it is simple and straight forward. If you can clean a handgun you can clean an 1100. The 1100 I used for competition is set up with just a rib but if I need a slug gun I just use my H&K 121. I also went with a 26 inch Hastings Wad-Lock barrel which has straight rifling for better shot patterns. The advantage to a 26 inch barrel is a total of 11 rounds in the gun.

I want a semi auto 12 gauge that uses drum mags that hold 20-25 rounds. I don't know for sure but I think those are still illegal because of the street sweeper shot gun that got banned a few years ago. If that style mag stays illegal, then I guess I'll go with one that uses regular mags, maybe 10 round capacity. I know there's a Chinese model out right now that uses box mags but I'm sure if it's worth a crap or not.

That FN SLP is Sexy, anyone have any experience with them? I amy do the 18" bbl version

If you can "out-trigger" a M1S90 I'd be shocked. I've owned a lot of shotguns and beaten the hell out of them all. My recomendations in the given price range and under:
Pump- Remington 870 Police model, Winchester 1300, Mossberg 590 with the nod going to the 870 as first pick.
Semi- Benelli M1S90, Win. SX2, Rem. 1187 Police (or other variants)
Despite what I have read on various forums from time to time, my S90 never faltered with light loads. A good break in, quality grease on the parts that need them (I use Wilsons grease) and mine cycled even light target loads. They are the easiest to take apart/put together out of the above three and the recoil operated bolt keeps the cleaning down to a minimum. My 1187P was somewhat finiky when it was filthy, so I sold it and bought the S90. It could have been the low round count (less than 400) but it seemed to not like light loads.

The South Africans used to make the Protector that you cycled with a twist of the wrist. I was keen on one but it was little use in going for Guinefowl. They were difficult to store, needed a special licence and was not in the least subtle. A box of SSG on the range and you needed a week to get the grin off your face. Sigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't seem to be able to get a weapon without waiting years in Bots.

I've had my eye on the Mossberg 930 Tactical. Semi auto, relatively inexpensive.

If you have no long guns at all, then I'd suggest getting an AR-15 in whatever configuration moves you.

And buy plenty of full-capacity magazines for it. (20 and 30 round)

Given the current political climate and the dark cloud of impending democrat doom, buy an AR-15 now before the election. If you wait until after tha election and the Dems get a super-majority in the Senate, a higher one in the House and O-Bamma wins, everyone else that waited too long will find that everything is sold out and that when they restock prices are much higher than they were today as I type this.

Hey! Do we know each other? Where do you shoot 3-gun?

It is possible. I shoot all over, or I did...don't shoot as often these days.

I prefer 18.5 inch barrel for home defense.

Having a longer barrel actually makes very little difference for home defense. In that role a shotguns place is in defending a set position, ie a bedroom or hallway at the top of the stairs. It is the worst choice for patrolling a house after that infamous bumb in the night wakes you up. Even an 18 inch barrel is awkward in a hallway and is too long to be able to clear corners without giving the BG a chance to grab it as it leads around the corners and through doorways. That is a handgun's job, not a long arm's.

If he is a competitive shooter in Indiana I probably have met him. I have served as a VP of the Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association so I know many of the shooters here. And more than one or two are very memorable.
