Any thoughts or concerns? Does anyone here have one that they have used and tested out? I really like the look of them and would use the knife for hunting/skinning and general outdoorsy schtuff. Please post pics......

Daniel makes basically two styles of knives now. His and Karen Shook's primitive styles knives which he has been making for years and is probably responsiblee for the world-wide popularity for this style knife and his newer "Winkler Knives II" which are more Tactical in design and construction.

I've owned quite a few Winkler pieces and have spent time with Daniel discussing his knives and don't think you can go wrong with any knife he makes
whether for collecting/display purpose or for ultra extreme use. I believe there's quite a few active military operatives who depend on his knives
and hawks. This is probably the ultimate endorsement for field worthiness.

Daniel is an extremely versatile knifemaker. Aside from primitive and tactical knives he can make a beautiful dressed up tradition Bowie right with the
most talented and well know ABS mastersmiths.

yes, Kevin, that and the other one you used to display but have sold are my favorite Winkler knives. The OP had better be prepared to spend big $ though even for a using knife.

I use a Winkler II Belt knife at work. It feels great in the hand, has excellent edge retention and is able to handle hard use. Daniel Winkler is a master craftsman and his products reflect it. I would recommend Daniels knives and tools without hesitation.

tiogatires, I sent you a pm with additional info...

I have a Winkler 2 belt knife, and it is without question the best all around fixed blade Ive ever had. Its really sharp, holds its edge well, the sheath is great and it feels good in the hand. Theres really nothing I dont like about it. I use it a lot and its in my backpack or on me everyday. I got the one with the wooden handle and its held up well and is really comfortable. If you have the cash, get one.

I'd have no hesitation strapping a Winkler II to my belt and using it hard. Same goes for a Winkler custom piece - though the comparative cost would certainly be greater.

I also own the belt knife. Its a great EDC and the blade shape was designed for maximum penetration without drifting, this is incredible to me because it has so much belly. The feel of the knife is really something, texturally, and though they look deceptively simple there is a genius about them that is sublime. When I ordered a very early model from a dealer, I realized the grinds were slightly off at the ricasso from side to side and I commented to Mr Winkler about it in an email. He wrote me back instantly demanding that he make me a new knife with the handle material of my liking, and was exceptionally speedy in getting it to me. This knife was one of the first of the line and he said a couple got by that were not to his standards. He added they had pretty much gotten the Winkler II knives down to a science at this point. I can testify that his heat treat on these 52100 blades is as good as Dozier's on his D2, I know because I've used them side by side and they have a similar edge retention and absolutely wicked sharpness. I'll reiterate that Mr Winkler is not just a master of his trade, he is a man who will make sure you have the best tool possible. I'm dying to get a custom from him with some of Karen's leather.

less thinking, more buying.

A Winkler II is on my wish list but I have bigger fish to fry first; a Loveless, Knight, and Wheeler! (A guy can always dream)

Considering what some factory knives are going for these days, I think that the Winkler II knives are very reasonably priced for what you are getting.

I sent him a message that I was missing a carry strap........he replied I will send you 2 for free

I like that one...it's different than the standard combat hawk. I wonder if it's an older iteration or if it's one of the contracted designs for one of the special ops teams.

I finished reading the book "No Easy Day", the story about the UBL mission. The SEAL author has a Daniel Winkler knife in his kit. Didnt say which one.
