Thinking about buying a strider GB or an AR or a commander, Are they worth the money?

Most people who pay this much for a knife don't want to use it for anything harder than opening packages (not that i will be much different)so it's hard to get a real idea of what they can handle. I'm going to IRAQ next month and I want A knife that will live. I just orderd an emerson commander but I like striders.Who has put their knife through the hardest test?

I've used my GB to open ammo cartons, metal food cans, pried open misc "stuff", used it to cut up my food and a bunch of other deeds. And it has NEVER had even the slightest issue. Plus if I was stupid enough to actually break the damn thing, Mick, Duane and the boys would replace it without question. There's no other brand of folder that finds its way into my pocket or into my grab bag, like a Strider.

I don't own any Emmerson's, so I'm not qualified to make any comparisons between the brands.

I can only speak for the Strider AR, one tough mother. I use mine for any thing you would possiably use a blade for (including light prying)and don´t worry about it. If you manage to break it, you have done something!

There is an article in Blade (Can't remember which one) where they take a fixed blade Strider and cut thru the roof of a car sideways:D

As for myself I can only speak for ATS 34 and S30V steel.
Frikkin tough! It will perform up to its reputation.
With Paul Bos doing the HT you will get a superior blade.
The rest is up to the maker.

I've owned two strider folders and have another one on the way. They're not magic - they can't cut through a tank. But they are good tough knives with a great warranty. That emerson commander you ordered can problably take close to the same abuse as the strider. Are they worth the money??? Thats for you to decide - I look at it like this.. Im super into knives and right now I am fortunate enough to be able to part with $400 dollars and not really notice it. In harder times when I've needed all my money just to get by.. then no they are not worth it and a spyderco delica will serve all my needs just fine. If ya got the dough - striders are reeeeallllly nice! Go for it!

Got both and love em. My GB is slightly chipped when trying to cut through WD-10 commo wire, though. Otherwise great knife. Great for carry when you're terrified and politically correct Commander won't let you carry a fixed blade for fear you might injure yourself and his career would be in jeopardy for allowing you to have a tool to better do your job.

Also an SOG Powerlock for the rest of the tasks. Cutting ammo bands and the like.

A good knife and multi tool is all ya really need.

21 years now and still going...

Blinker: Is that the article about the contest between the Firemen and the knife weilder? That was a Mad Dog knife. Guy at the scene immediately starts to cut open the roof and a responding Fire Fighter unit arrives and does the same with their tools on an identical car. Guy with knife wins (basically cause he started first). Or is it another article?

I'm buying a GB today,is it true that if i somehow break it they will replace it free? My main concern is the pivot joint, On my emerson super cqc7 the only way to eliminate blade play was to tighten the pivot screw but that makes it open and close about like a fixed blade so i sent it back for a commander, If this one does the same thing I'll just get my money back. From what i've heard about strider they seem to make the best knife around.

Striders are designed and engineered to perform some very tough tasks. It can do almost everything that knives are supposed to do.

Other than that, find something more practical. Strider fans know what I am talking about. The name Strider is mentioned at the same level of respect as when you mention Rolls Royce! :)

Knowing your needs going in allows you to make wise tool choices. If you're that concerned about the pivot, then also avail yourself to a fixed blade or pry bar. If you break the folder, then you lose it for the time it takes to get it looked at and addressed, so you might as well prepare yourself to avoid challenging your tools by overstressing - using them for other than what they were designed for. If the debate singles around wanting a tool that does it all, then losing the tool loses you all that ability.

I'm not going to ever break it, I just want the insurance of A good warranty.I have A TOPS moccasin ranger I'll be using for the harder tasks, But I don't want to carry A 12" fixed blade everywhere, because theres hardly ever A need for such A large knife.I'll also be carrying A spyderco endura because it pisses me off when people want to borrow my knives and they use them to cut an axle in half or something. Nobody's touching my strider or my emerson.

Unless Emersons have improved GREATLY in quality since just a short time ago, there really is no comparison, the Striders are on a different level. MUCH stronger and better quality, and a higher liklihood of receiving a well put together knife IMO.

I have seen too many production Emersons, brand new in stores that were, frankly, a joke, with major flaws. If the choice is between these 2, It's a no brainer, Strider all the way.

It might help you to know that Strider's hardened pivot screws are supposed to be the largest and best designed in the business.

Strider knives are not magical, I can't say an SnG is better than a Sebenza, different, for sure, better, hard to say, the Sebenza is the better MADE knife, but, Striders are, well, ummm, very badass, nobody, to my knowledge has ever thought of a Sebenza as badass....... :)

But, the one thing I will say is both are far better than a production Emerson.

When you get the GB in your hands for the first time you will laugh like a schoolgirl. You really cannot imagine the shear hugeness of these knives until you have held one. The Buck versions are tiny in comparison. BadAss all the way! ;)

My GB will be here in two days 4 hours and 47 minutes 37 seconds 36,35,34,.
I'm giving Emerson one more chance and if this knife isn't perfect it's going back to the factory, They're just too expensive to have any flaws.

well - maybe its not a good idea to compare strider to emerson, but I must say that recently I bought an emerson wave (cqc-7b) and the thing is solid! Its kinda heavy, stout blade, zero bladeplay, and loud click when lock engages. f+f is also very very good. I also just purchased a gen 6 sng from TAD and it should be here wednesday, hopefully this one will not have any bladeplay like my last one did. I bought a gen 3 and loved it so much that I thought I ended my quest for the perfect folder - I even sold my sebenza. Then I discovered a little bladeplay in the sng and couldnt get past it, I probably should have sent it in, but I didnt know at that time that they (strider) would fix that. So I am giving another try. But I remember thats why I sold sebenza.. cuz the strider was just so "badass" that I didnt even appreciate the quality of the sebenza anymore. The feeling in the hand, hell striders even smell badass - like crude oil or something. Im sure once the sng gets here the emerson will see alot of drawer time but in their defense the emerson I own is a very high quality knife with no flaws (I wouldn't pay 400 for her tho)
