Thinking about buying my first spyderco

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to a reputable knife shop this weekend that carries spydercos. Not sure how he is on pricing, but I can go to his shop and handle some and get an idea of what size I want. Been checking out online knife shops so I have an idea on pricing. I'm leaning on the Endura or Delica and I like the Native and Manx and Salts that have been suggested. But if I go to his shop and the Enduras/Delicas are the same price that I can get a Native online, I'll probably just wait and order a Native. I'm hoping he's priced right so I don't have to wait!

You might want to look at the Endura/Delicas with the Emerson wave opening feature. It's a super fast deployment and I love it. Just another thought for you to consider

Another question I thought of. Are there any spyderco steels that will take on a patina after using it?

A few. There are some sprints in superblue that are mostly sold out. The frn line used a laminated version so only the part near the edge Patinas. There is m4 in the Gayle Bradley (which is a hell of a knife by the way) and the Air. There have also been some sprints in m4. It won't stain nearly as easily as superblue, but it will take a patina. There is cruwear which isn't really stainless but it doesn't take much patina unless u really force the issue. I'm sure there are others but those come to mind.

The Gayle Bradley is a knife worth checking out. As well built as just about anything in their lineup. Beautiful, super tough knife that kind of has and "old school" feel to it to me.

Oh, yes.

If you're willing to spend the extra cash over an Endura, Delica, Stretch FRN as I recommended, definitely look at the Gayle Bradley. It is, without any doubt, my favorite Spyderco. In fact, if I should ever stop carrying my favorite slipjoint Stockman, it will be because of the Gayle Bradley fulfilling all my needs. I've had mine for only a couple of months but I like it more every time I use it. So much so, I bought a second one to put away in reserve. The M4 steel does take a slight patina over time, much like D2. It's more of a light grey overall cast rather than the patina like 1095 or Case's CV.

As noted, there are other steels used by Spyderco that patina but I'm only familiar with the M4 in the GB. Really a superb knife.

SuperBlue develops a nice patina...you still see SuperBlue Delicas, Enduras, and Stretch's, but their numbers are definitely decreasing day by day. This is my Stretch...fantastic knife.

Pretty much everything Steve just said. The endura and delica are classics and either would be a worthy choice. The caly 3.5 is an amazing knife. It carries very slim in the pocket and has ergonomics that are superior to...well...to just about anything.

I have a Manix 2, pm2, Delica, Endura, Caly 3.5, and a Sage 1 (which is awesome). By far my favorite has been my Caly. 3.5. It is such a great knife with a serious blade that carries like a small knife.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Been doing some research on this over the week and I'll be able to look them over in person over the weekend. I think I've narrowed it down between an Endura, Delica, Native, or Stretch.
I kind of like how the Stretch is in between the Endura and Delica and I have a few more questions on it. Does the Stretch date back into the 1980's before the Endura and Delica? I "think" read that it started out in the 1980's as a hunting model?
Also, what version of the Stretch is the newest? If a shop has NIB of older versions, I'd want to get the most current.

Just buy the one you like the best. Don't over analyze things too much, you'll take the fun right out of it. Get yourself a ZDP-189 Stretch. Sal designed the Stretch as his own personal knife, happens to fit a lot of peoples hand like a glove as well. Here is a bunch of information compiled on Spyderco knives, very good reading.
