I'm thinking of getting a coworker/buddy of mine a decent, low cost American Made knife.A one handed opener, with a frame-lock(Kershaw's),or a mid-lock(Spyderco's),no recurve either because he's a novice sharpener.Maybe a 3"-3.5" blade,No AO,because the way he plays with it,he'll probably snap that torsion bar in a week. They'll send out a new one or replace it,but why not just try & bypass all that.(I know Kershaw has theee BEST CS in the business.I've used it first hand.I once had a problem with a low cost folder <15$,I sent it in to Thomas,& he sent me a new one, along with two more new ones,in case I had anymore problems.)

Anyway, this guy Mike,He's a really funny guy & makes the time pass on those slow days. He's always showing me these gas station junk knives. He seems to always be playing around with it when I see him(just opening & closing it).I don't see him outside work.He goes fishing a lot,& thats basically what he uses his knives for, along with other EDC stuff.
His one knife was not as bad as I thought it would be for a $10 china knife. It's a SS frame-lock with just a little play in every:rolleyes: direction. He's always asking me to sharpen it for him.I did it once.I got that crap steel as sharp as I could get it,so next time I just gave him one of those carbide pull through thingys, for his cheap knives.I explained to him, don't ever use that on a quality knife, you'll ruin your edge.He asked me the other day,"Is there anything I could do to keep it from loosening up at the pivot?"I said yea,you could use lock-tight,but it probably cost more than your knife....zzzziiiiiiiiiing!:p:D

We might have a possible convert here guys. Can't have too many knife enthusiasts.

I'm trying to keep this under $25

Looking for suggestions on USA Made tactical folders.

Kershaw,Spyderco,or Buck?

What do you think?

I was thinking maybe the Kershaw Chill or the OD 1 or 2.I never held either.

Thanks Esav & CM.

I gotta hit the sac, I'll check back in the morning

Sleep is over-rated.

What kind of blade style does he like?

I was just looking at a Kershaw Needs Work 1820 the other day for about $24.

http://www.knifeworks.com/search.aspx?find=kershaw+1820

I was looking at it because I like that straight-style blade, easier to sharpen so that might be a good fit for him, and I was amazed they were offered for that price. With shipping it would probably come out a little over, but it's the only one I can really suggest.

Maybe a Buck Odyssey? You can pick them up for about $20 most places I've seen.

He actually sounds like a guy who uses his knife a lot, so I second the Buck Vantage Select suggestion.

This Kershaw Junkyard Dog will make an excellent gift too.

He likes a drop point.

So far it's a toss up between a JYD & a Buck Vantage select.

Thanks for the suggestions.

+1 on the JYD recommendation.

The OD-2 is a little too small for me [I have big hands]. I like it because it's extremely easy to flip, but on reconsideration should probably have bought the OD-1.

Kershaw Nerve maybe? I've been looking at some of their lower end knives lately and I have to say, they're pretty nice looking. The Nerve (and most of their other low end knives) have blades made of 8cr13mov, which is the same steel as another good bang-for-your-buck knife, the Spyderco Tenacious.

The Nerve has a nice sized blade a bit over 3 inches, machined g10 handle, liner lock, and top mounted ambidextrous thumbstud. If I wasn't already waiting for their Volt II to come out, I would pick one up.

EDIT: My bad, its made in China. Dunno if that's a deal breaker. Still carries the Kershaw name though.

I second the Kershaw Skyline. Lightweight, large enough blade. Thumbstud is useless, more of a stop pin than anything. But the flipper is play-able.

The SOG salute looks like a decent cheaper tac knife, don't know where it's made but IIRC it's in your budget.

I'm going with the Buck Vantage Select. They're like $22+shipping, & the only thing that didn't meet my criteria in the OP,is it's a liner-lock instead of a frame-lock.Buck's 420HC is better than any steel he's ever had in a knife,& should be easy for him to maintain.

I would've went with the Kershaw Storm 1 or 2,if it wasn't for the recurve.I want to get him something that's easy to sharpen himself.

I'm going to close this now.

Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions.

Thanks DoctaD,but I'll never buy anything from Ontario Knife Co.

gotta say the tenacious or the persistence...ya i know they are a little more then the posted value but they are totally worth the extra money.

My 2 cents.

i'd either go for a buck vantage or a kershaw junkyard dog.

different styles, both american made and both affordable.

i own both and love them.

That was my first thought, too, but it is made in China, as is all of the Byrds as well as the Spyderco Persistence and Tenacious. RAT folders are made in Taiwan.

I don't think you can get a Spydie for under $25. I think you can find a few Kershaws, though. Maybe a Zing? The Buck Vantage looks great, too.
