Thinking about getting a RC-4

Hi everyone,

I currently have a Fallkniven F1 and a Dozier KS-3 Professional Guide. I just got the F1 and wanted it as a carry when I'm fishing on the river - needed something stainless. I use the KS-3 for misc. camping and hiking.

I'm really wanting an ESEE though, and I think I want a RC-4. I don't like blades over 5" so I'm not looking for anything huge. The ESEE appeals on many levels - it seems like all I see in Doziers are safe queens, and even though I know it's designed for it, it's an awful expensive knife to take out and beat on. If I HAD to survive with it, I'm sure it would be wonderful.

I was wondering how the RC-4 stacks up against something like a Dozier? The Dozier is D2 and has a 4.75" blade. It's really nice on every level (except the non-stainless aspect).

I guess I'm looking for a carry knife that I'm not going to cry about when I jack it up or when my son bangs it against a rock (I think that's just a matter of time).

Regards,
Jeff

ESEE 4 is a great knife but build to be used not looked at... you have some nice knives... adding a 4 could give you a daily user....

I find the ESEE 4 to be pretty much perfect for hiking/backpacking/bushcrafting type task. It's a great length(I find the ESEE 3 a little short), and handles smaller, more intricate task, as well as heavier task (such as batoning) equally well. It's heavy enough that you know it will hold up to whatever you can throw at it, without being overly heavy and bulky. It's just the perfect happy medium to me. The only thing I'm looking to change is the sheath, but that's just personal opinion. I'm planning on ordering one of the sharpshooter leather sheaths for mine. I don't have any experience with the other two knives you mentioned, but I can imagine you could go wrong with the ESEE 4.

as TexasTony said the 4 is to be used and abused, that with the izula is a great duo!!!!!

You most definitely need a 4. If I could only have one, that would be it. Definitely my most used knife.

the 4 is a great knife - the way ESEE stands behind their product makes it a completely worry-free piece of gear.

It'll handle just about anything you can throw at it, really.

I run an IZULA and a 4. Great great combination for basic camping and the 4 or izula are great carry knives.

Both being my first ESEE knives I was happy with the versatility of that combination. When I needed a bigger knife for batonning and collection firewood the 4 shined (good for batonning medium sized wood). The IZULA is great for little camp tasks whether it is stripping bark for tinder, feathering kindling or cutting cord for tarps and tents.

I'm looking at a molle back for my 4 at the moment so I can do a belt carry on it for EDC when I'm up north more often.

my IZULA is my first and I am looking into getting a 4 next for this reason, I think that for general camping and hiking that they are the perfect combination of size and weight

My Izula and RC-4 are the 2 knives that come with me into the bush/mountains every time. They compliment one another well.

I have been using folder knives all these time until recently I was introduced to fix blade. I found RC4 to be a perfect size for general use for outdoor activities.

You won't be disappointed with a 4, love mine. If your really into the dozier tho, boker is reproducing a few fixed models now for under $100. Not D2 I don't think but maybe worth a look. The 4 is my fav and recommendation tho

I just got the 4, my first Esse, a clip point version. I can not compare to the Doziers, but if you want a VERY sharp blade straight from the packet with great ergos and a great feel, I doubt you could go wrong!!!

I certainly plan on getting more...

Hi everyone,

I currently have a Fallkniven F1

Then why take a step back??:D...just kidding......kinda.

Seriously, I found the two too similar in size to carry around both...but my RC3 is a keeper:thumbup:

Wait... The RC-4 is the same size as a F1? All the comparisons I have seen are between the RC-3 and the F1. Isn't the 4 about 1/2" longer?

Yes it's longer but I think the F1 is closer in thickness to a 4. The 3 is the thinnest ESEE blade I think (besides the lite machete).

The 4 will be the next Esee knife I buy, it looks like a great compromise for camping/hiking/fishing.
