Thinking about getting a RC-4

Well, I held off as long as I could. Ordered a RC-4 in desert tan today.

Can't wait...

I think it is my favorite ESEE-4. Not so much because of the desert tan, but because of the canvas micarta scales.

Buy it and don't look back. It is a crazy deal. I orderd a ESEE 4 a couple a weeks ago. Now I just orderd an Izula. It is like the first knife you buy from ESEE has a bug with it. It crawls into your brain and says buy more ESEE products.

If it's just going to be a safe queen, why not sell the Dozier to me?

:)

Oh, it's not going to be a safe queen. I no longer keep queens. I just got rid of my Camillus EDC talonite because I couldn't take it upon myself to EDC it. If I won't use it, it's gotta go. I can't wait to deploy the RC-4.

And... I may sell my dozier... Don't know yet. I love it and love using it, but I HATE the vertical kydex sheath. It just doesn't wear right.

If I thought I could work out at trade for a Strider SNG, I might go for that though.

I think the RC-4 is going to be my main knife. We'll see. I think the F1 I have will be my "on the river" knife though, since it's stainless.

To top it all off, I think the knife will be at my office Friday - just in time for the weekend. The buzzkill is that my wife came home from the grocery tonight and has started labor, so my guess is I won't get my hands on it until Tuesday :grumpy:.

On the bright side, my wife is going to give me another child. That trumps a new knife every time!

That's a whole other kind of EDC! Congratulations. And PM me with what you'd take for the Dozier.

You'll be the first on my list IF I decide to get rid of it - I have to get the DC-4 in hand first and see if it sways me one way or the other. :D

On another note, the wife's labor stopped at 3:45 this morning, so I guess the little girl isn't quite ready to come visit us yet. Back to business as usual. I bet she starts labor again sometime tonight though.

the 4 is a great knife - the way ESEE stands behind their product makes it a completely worry-free piece of gear.

It'll handle just about anything you can throw at it, really.

Well said. I don't worry about mine when I'm using it and this is why. That said, I haven't had even a scuff yet and I've used it several times for everything from spear construction to fish cleaning (related activities ;)).
Top notch quality!
I've been using petroleum jelly on the edge after cleaning it as well.

Also the size makes it quite manoeuvrable as far as carry goes.

The ESEE-4 is probably the best of all worlds. Big enough to get things done, handy enough to have with you. I play mind games for fun. I just watched a thing about Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. I imagined the whole outfit equiped with ESEE-4s (and some of each of the rest of the ESEE line). My brain always came back to the 4 though.

So yeah, get one. I love mine. I plan on getting another...maybe an orange one.

there are plenty of people who use their RAT/ESEE knives around water or in wet environments. a little cleaning and PM and there don't seem to be any major [rpblems.

but perhaps your river is wetter than the jungles Jeff and Mike go to in the tropics? have you seen the pix on the website?

Good call, I got the orange with the green blade. Looks pretty sharp (no pun intended!).

@fixer - I have had my RC4 fully submerged, barely cleaned it after use and I think I got a few spots on the edge. Stropped it and cleaned it and as good as new, and learned a thing or two about cleaning.

If I could only have one knife for my hunting adventures it would be the RC-4. I picked up the Izula though for everyday tasks and it even helps with some bear skinnin'. Along with my Leatherman XTi that I just always seem to have with me, that is all I feel I need to bring with me into the boonies (and I don't really need the Leatherman or the Izula). I confess though that I am glad I have one of the cool logo/name "Rat Cutlery" ones! :)

Wow, this is a substantial knife! I had no idea. Compared to my Dozier, this is much heavier feeling - not in a bad way, just different.

Fit and finish are impeccable of course, and the Kydex sheath is so excellent that it really makes me hate my Dozier sheath. Horizontal carry is where it's at for me for sure.

Really glad I went with the desert tan too - Just a nice, relaxing color - classy looking all the way. The slightly rough canvas micarta is cool too. Nice and grippy!

So here's a shot of the ESEE-4 along with my Dozier KS-3 and my Fallkniven F-1. I've seen the comparison with a F-1 before, but not with a Dozier.

Sorry, it was shot at night on my iPhone, so it's a little grainy.
