Thinking about getting my first benchmade folder.

I'm getting the 553 Griptillian. I have to wait about 12 weeks to get the money because I only get paid 10$ every Friday. By the way, what's IMHO?
Are you basing your calculation on the MSRP of the knife? You can get Benchmades below MSRP if you buy from a dealer, although most charge MAAP (Benchmade's minimum allowable advertised price, which is 15% below MSRP). However, some places, including Knifeworks and GP Knives (google them), get around the MAAP policy by offering a further discount with a coupon code. Knifeworks also offers laser engraving.

this

I have a Rift that I like

I have a 710 that I LOVE

Different strokes. I have 7 Rift that I love.

I have 1 710 that, to be honest, I don't even like that much.

If you don't have the knife bug and not willing to buy a bunch of knives, its always best to try and hold them before buying. Also, a Griptilian can be had for about $70 instead of $120.

If you do a google search, there is a site selling the 553 for $60.45 with free shipping. Best to get your dad to call them and make sure they have it in stock.

I think I might go with the Griptillian. Just one question. Why is the Griptillian so special?

One of the most popular things about Benchmades is the Axis lock. The Griptilian is the lowest priced knife that BM offers with that lock.

For the record, you will read plenty of great reviews about the 710, but it's not everyone's favorite. Like FlaMtnBkr, I don't even like it that much. I like:

Griptilians
14200/205/210
940/943/960
HD Hardtail/Mini

I LOVED my 943. Slim. Fits nicely in the pocket. Great steel. I really loved that knife. I've had a few and it's a great size. and BM 154cm is great steel. Great shape and fits nice in the hand. I want to get another one pretty soon.

Axis lock is great. The 943 is axis lock. I trust it a lot and it's very quick to deploy and return also. I can deploy axis lock as fast or faster than a automatic.

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion. I was being facetious, BTW (By The Way).

You can't go wrong with a Griptilian. You should be able to pick one up for about $50-60 (used) or $70-80 (new).

I daily carry a 710-801 and absolutely love it. I don't see the issue with size. It's very thin and I usually forget I'm carrying it.

.

If you don't mind -

What advantages in you opinion does the 950 has over the 710 ?
Or in other words - whats make you love the 950 so much and don't like 710 ?

Just saw an excellent BM580 or BM585 with awesome BLUE handles on the forum here. You might consider one of those. Or I suggest a Ritter grip (regular or mini) from Knifeworks. JMHO.

I've owned a lot of Benchmades ans sold them all off except the 710 and the 940 - both are remarkable knives.

You never mentioned what you decided to buy Wolf Trait? If so I missed it. Do tell man. :)

My favorite Benchmade are the Grip models, more specifically the Ritters.
The Ritters Grips have an excellent blade shape. Very versatile and works very well for my needs.
I also like the heft and/or feel of the full bellied blades. I've got both the large and small versions in the M2 steel (no longer made) and the M4 steel models. All of Benchmades steels are good so no there are no worries there.
If you were my buddy, I would definitely try to talk you into either a small or large Ritter, depending on where and what you would be using it for.
The large Ritter is one heck of a blade.Big enough for anything I'd be throwing at it. But if there could be an issue with you having such a large knife.
You know, someone may freak when they see it in your hand. Then by all mean get the smaller version. Either way it is one sweet knife.

940 is my favorite Axis lock BM also. Overall, however, I have to go with a Mini Skirmish.

BTW, OP said he's getting a 553 -- it's a good first BM.

I don't like the skinny blade of the 710 as much as the wider Rift. I also don't like the recurve on the 710 and the 710 seems a little thicker behind the edge. The longer taper on the Rift seems like it slices through materials better and the 710 seems to wedge in material more. The lock on the 710 doesn't seem as refined as the Rift and the 710 was the first AXIS but has not been improved in the last 10 or so years. When you pull the lock bar back on the 710 you have to pull it all the way until it stops before the blade is released. The Rift has more travel so when pulled back it just feels a lot better and is easier to manipulate. On top of that I just like the shape and design of the Rift better. This is all based on my opinion and preferences and there are lots of people that love the 710.

I'm getting the BM 553 Griptillian w/ black blade coating.
Gonna get it personlized to say Wolf Trait. That's what I've been going by for 6 years now.
Then I'm getting my logo that I made 3 years ago put on the blade as well. I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna get a whole lot of crap about this but I don't mind.:o

... looking around Benchmade's site and have seen alot of things
... want a folder first of all.
... want a knife under 150
I'm not ever going to sell it because it's my first BenchMade knife.

No way man. I like it. That knife will always be a special one for you. Congrats! :D

I am not trying to talk you out of a Benchmade,
but you may want to look at what Zero Tolerance has in your price range.
I think you would be very happy with what ZT is offering.

And as far as first Benchmades go,
You cannot got wrong with a Griptillian.

x2 I also think benchmade ergonomics are not to great IMO...
