Thinking about Going Traditional

leather pocket sheath! one with a pocket clip on the outside to keep it upright, that way it will mimic a pocket clip on the knife and keep your knife from getting scuffed by keys, coins etc! I'll deffinately be getting one madeonce I aquire a GED farm and field sodbuster ;)

Some folks like to carry their mid-sized folders vertically beside their wallets...I carry a leather wallet in a rear pocket so it usually just stays there unnoticed by me or anyone else.

I'll second that.

I carried around a nice older Boker next to my wallet for a while a long time ago. At the time, I was cowboying quite a bit and wore fairly snug wranglers. This added to the fact of hating the knife going 'sideways' in my front pocket. I liked how it rode next to the wallet since it was unobtrusive and no one knew it was there exept me. The snug jeans kept it from going anywhere, though I did have to be aware when I dropped trou' to use the john.

As far as being slower, well, isn't that traditionally what 'traditional' means? Older and lower tech. Thus Slower? I'm not knocking it mind you. I'm just saying that is sort of the whole point of a tradition. something to take you back in time. When I think of my traditional folders, I think of my Dad and his Dad. I fondly remember my Grandfather whistling while he opened his old Barlowe and slowly cut the tape on wrapping paper so that he could gently fold and reuse the wrapping paper. Good times.

I find a leather sheath that hangs from the belt (or belt loop) with a cord inside front pocket most usefull. If you dont want it to show you can choose the color of the cord so that it is close to to the color of your pants. Or you can use a short keychain, most people just think you have keys hanging there.

There is a trade off either way. A small knife will not be noticed in the pocket. At the same time, it will be harder to notice if it slips out.

This is a really good point, especially when it comes to peanuts. I've had mine fall out of my pocket unnoticed while sitting on the couch and while driving my car. Luckily I've always found it. Some people stuff a bandana in the same pocket with good results. I switched to watch pocket carry when available.

You can still have the best of both worlds if you want. One option is to carry two knives, one traditional for socially acceptable uses, and something else for other tasks.

I'd go into more details about what I carry in addition to traditionals but I don't want to stray into prohibited conversation. You could look at the Case Trapperlock but that's really a modern style knife in traditional clothing.

Case makes a series of sueded pouches for their knives that come in three sizes, and are usually sold in 5-packs though I have seen them sold individually. Google for Case pouch models 9066, 9067, and 9068 and you'll find a number of retailers. From the pics there seem to be some with the Case logo on them and some that are plain, no idea why the difference.

Up to you whether the added bulk would be worth it. I'm considering getting some more for drawer storage than for carrying.

Good thought! And, there's actually a place for such discussion/details within this forum.

Take a look at this thread, "Traditional and Modern Pairings."

I'd be interested in seeing what you choose to carry, and why-- within the parameters of Frank's injunction to make sure there is traditional knife content in your post(s). :)

As requested, I've added my combo to that thread. :)

Nothing wrong with carrying your Peanut, and your Benchmade at the same time. Best of both worlds.
I carry a small, or medium traditional in one pocket, and a clipped on knife in my right pocket.

Exactly. Today my Benchmade was in my right overalls pocket, Opinel #8 in the left, and a slim trapper in the chest pocket up top.
