A very basic knife. I`m figuring around 6 1/2" overall, with a 2 3/4" - 3" drop point blade, of 1/8" thick O1 steel. Handles would be black canvas micarta, (other choices for a few dollars extra, probably $15), and they would come with a kydex pocket sheath. Thoughts, comments, interest?

After giving it some thought, I am going to sell these for $100 + $8 shipping. A true $100 knife, (you can`t count shipping!)

Price Breakdown:

EO1 (EDC or Hunter, black canvas micarta, aluminum pins, kydex sheath) $100
Optional wood handle $15
Brass pins $3
Leather pouch sheath $15
Shipping $8

sounds sweet, I think a low priced "entry" knife is a cool idea.

I also got to thinking about the LRK idea, a small but reasonable edc size, that people could experiment with. It seemed to be popular and it is what got me doing it, I loved checking that thread and seeing what everybody was coming up with and despite the great work in there I think the key to it was the terrible work, like mine!, because it was cool to see people trying it, specifically because you offered it, and talking with each other, and with those who had more knowledge and experience. Anyway, sorry just got to thinking about that.

John, I think that if you could put a package together that you could sell for $110.00 (or as close to) with free shipping (USPS small flat rate box priority mail is currently $ 5.80). If it came with a business size card certificate of authenticity - maker's mark, knife specs and date of manufacture - it could become a steady seller. Give it its own page with some testimonials from the O1 abusers in the your crowd (Myke comes to mind). I'd be happy to help you develop the marketing aspects I mention.

Maybe the (my) price is not realistic. Too bad, would be even better to keep it to $ 99.95 + S&H. Then it's a nice and reasonably affordable gift item. Just thinking out loud. I do like the idea of a - low priced "entry" knife especially one that is virtually indestructible.

Yes, a generic multi-use type pattern. The low price point is a great gateway to show your skills and products to potential customers.

I think I could do it for $110 shipped, just a basic, no frills knife. If people want extras, like wood handles, liners, etc., I would have to charge extra. Next week is O1 week (I have a Hawk to do), so I might possibly make a couple of these to post.

Thanks to all for the input so far!

Sounds like a great idea, maybe offer the tool or small item with the knife to get it started, only to last a short time as an introductory special. I have fallen for Duck Childress smaller knives lately, just so handy and great looking to boot. There definitely is a market for it. Price is good. Let's see some concept drawings.

OK, so I first think you could call it RAY - yup, after me . I'm little and efficient and some might say sharp, but then I think…

Naw - who would buy a RAY knife when they can get a RAY gun instead. So I offer:

1) ELEMENT O1 - Tells you that it is a basic essential knife made with O1 steel
and harkens to the 4 basic elements of earth, air, fire & water - available at all the good camp sites.

2) JK MOKENA - Everyone at the Mokena Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and at the Mayor's Office will soon own one and all of those folks will be sure to make JK knives famous as they push to get a Mokena made product out into the world. What's your EDC? Why a JK Mokena, of course.

Just a few thoughts on the subject for your consideration.

ELEMENT O1 Is a great name

but Ray, if every important person in Mokena bought a knife from John, that would be about .....4.

Element is a cool name.

You could also call it the "JK Essential"

A Rockywolf's Choice? An EWOK? My personal EWOK is a great knife, a good little knife in a pancake sheath with a matching fire steel.

I will be waiting to see "Pic's" ~~ as I have something in mind but I won't be needing a Sheath -- just the Knife.**

I think it's an excellent idea. Personally I think a 3" blade would probably do better than 2 3/4" - a little bit of extra blade real estate can go a long way :) An inexpensive knife that you can churn could do really well. There have been some ongoing sales threads in the knifemakers market area where people have done similar - with what appears to be a significant demand.
Also, you were probably going to already but if you could make the pocket sheath Tek Lok compatible it will probably be a good bit of value adding.

Wonderful, also I like the idea of a 3 inch knife also, just a tad longer will help and still small enough for easy carry. Also, the handle should be designed carefully to be comfortable for such a knife, not too small and yet fits the hand well to make using the knife a joy. All too often, in general, a great knife is hampered by a lousy handle. I really see a market for such a knife when reading the forums.

Should I increase the handle from 3 1/2" to 4"? it might be more comfortable, but may be too big for EDC. Thoughts?
