Thinking back, please take a moment

I don't remember exactly. I was somewhere between 5 and 8 because I was living in New Bern, NC at the time. It was a Barlow style knife. I don't know if I found it or it was given to me.

7 yrs. old.

Never forget the black slipjoint Dad gave me. Eventually, my younger brothers destroyed it. :(

Since, then it's been a gradual learning process which has accelerated recently to the point where I am making my first knife.

Best wishes to all on the forums.:)

At 12 or so I had a boy scout knife. By 15, I was camping with a nice jigged bone handled Puma (4" blade, really nice, was stolen from me when I was about 22). After the Puma, I bought a Buck 110, and then a simple Gerber FB by 25. Still have both of those. That was about it until I was in my early 40's some 7 years ago when I bought a Spyderco Delica, and the rest, as they say, is history!

First knife was a souvenir miniture 'Bowie Knife' I got from Crystal Cave in Pennsylvania. I really had to beg for that one :) When the wooden handle broke off my father made a new handle out of a .30-06 casing and lead. unfortunately I lost it in my yard several years later.

My first 'real' personal pocketknife was a Victorinox SAK, it was the biggest they offered at the time (1973)and I had to order it from Ireland. It cost $9.00!

I was 6 and my dad gave me a Camilus four bladed camp model. I still have it, even though it's beat up and rusty, I love it!

I guess that would be a Schrade Walden folding hunter I got when I was about 10. It's sitting in my wooden chest right now, deepening its patina year by year.

Welcome to the forum. I'll warn ya right now it's addicting.

Your second post and it's a great one too!

I believe my first pocket knife was a delrin handled twin carbon blade unit from Camillus. It pitted and stained over the years. I learned to take care of it and sharpen it. even tightened it up once or twice with a couple of controled firm taps with a smallish hammer.
I joined the Army and my parents sold the family home and moved. I think maybe the knife was sold in a garage sale.:(
I just got back from my Dads two weeks ago. the day I left he said "Here Son take this,I don't have a use for it anymore" and handed me the first sheath knife I bought, a F.HERDER A.Sn made in Solingen Germany. I bought it to go Moose hunting when I was 15. He kept that thing for 20 years. I thought he go rid of it too so you can imagine my suprise. It was like seing an old friend. :)

My mother gave me a basic four function Wegner Swiss Army Knife when I was ten before we went camping for the first time. I had read a book about a pilot that crashed and survived with a pocketknife and a jug of water and I wanted one after that. My father wouldn't let me have one so my mother bought one for me :)

My first pocketknife (don't remember brand) was a combination of 2 blades & fork & spoon at age 8. Had a couple more non-descript blades after that; then at age 14 I bought a Schrade 3-bladed trapper which I still have & use today (age 55).

Rick, if you try and post pictures from angelfire, you cant post it directly, you cant tell them to click on the link, the only thing you can do is instruct them to copy and paste the URL for it to work.
Here is the URL, dont click on it, copy and paste it http://www.angelfire.com/80s/star2/images/knife.jpg

My first knife was a wenger SAK boy scout edition, with green handles and my name engraved on it.

When I was really young, before I had even my very first knife, I remember eyeing those ultra-cheap slipjoint single-blade knives with the bright plastic handles with the shape of a whale shield in the middle. The ones you get in a hardware store.

Does anyone remember those? I think I ended up buying one eventually.

I was around 6-8 yrs old, living in Hawaii at the time, and my father gave me a Victorinox Boy Scout knife (that I believe is the one I am holding now....still a nice knife :) ).

After that I had a facination with Butterfly knifes (Bali's), after that phase it was Tanto styled blades (which I still like very much to this day), now...and I say this with a :D its Damascus and getting into Customs.

At around 10 years old I bought a Schrade Uncle Henry large 2 blade hunter, unfortunately lost by the age of 12.

I know I had a couple cheap knives when I was even younger, but the first real knife I can remember owning is a Schrade Old Timer small stockman purchased from Sears around 1971. I would have been about eight or nine. As I remember, the knife would take an amazing edge and had a high carbon blade but always suffered from rust and colorations even thought I tried to keep it well oiled. As I recall it had Delrin scales with a rough cut non slip finish. It probably cost $11.00 amd I loved it about as much as I love my small Sebenza now, but with the the different blades, the old lil stockman was probably more versatile overall.

PS: I ain't givin' up the lil sebbie!

A favorite topic of mine as it always brings back memories of my Grandfather, a man I really loved. He gave me my first knife. It was a pocket knife with the picture of Roy Rogers on the handle. I cherished that knife and wish that I still had it.

My Grandfather taught me to whittle with that knife and that is still a passtime that I enjoy very much.

I was eight years old.
