thinking of a spyderco tenacious

I don't mean to thread jack, but I'm torn between the Persistence and Tenacious. It will be my first knife and I'm not sure what blade length will be appropriate for me. Any ideas?

OP, as far as the research I have done, it's a big winner. Lots of great reviews on it, and people don't seem to be having an issue with the steel.

If I were you, I would just get both. I'm not kidding.

It's hard to give an answer to which is more appropriate when we don't know what you'll do with it ;)

I'm not sure what I'll do with it either, haha. Like I said, my first knife.

Based on knife use from my Leatherman MT, my occasional uses include: opening packages, cutting fruit, cutting strings. I just don't know what I would necessarily need the extra blade length for (or what others use it for) and if it's worth the extra weight.

If I were you, I would just get both. I'm not kidding.

If I could afford that I'd simply get a more pricey knife :)

Well if your blade is just going to be a light-duty cutter go with the persistance. The Tenacious is great, I've owned 2, but you may not like the larger blade (or just find it unnecessary) for simple edc tasks.

Get the Tenacious. If you're going to be cutting food, going with the longer blade is always better. Not that you're going to be able to slice all the way through a watermelon with it.

Also, at just over 3 inches, it is not "too much knife" to clip to your pocket. I consider the ideal EDC to be 3"-3 1/2", so it's right in that range. It has very smooth deployment, excellent ergonomics and solid lockup so you should be very happy with it.

I ended up ordering the Persistence. I drew both knives on paper based on their specs and pictures and the Tenacious looked a bit too large for me to feel comfortable carrying around. Thanks for the advice guys.

You wont be disappointed.
I went the same route because of the size difference.
Real nice size, but still a little large for me an EDC. The cat is more my size, and weight.
The steel is a little soft on the Persistence likes to roll the edge on me.
But for $30 can't complain.
Where did ya end up ordering it from?

That's great, I'll bet it won't be your last Spydie. BTW, what is your initial impression of the Persistence compared to other knives you've owned?

edit: didn't notice you decided already, oh well :P

can't go wrong with either. I'd maybe opt for the persistence, simply because the Tenacious does feel rather large, and looks huge to the sheeple. (from my experiences.) I prefer a 3" or smaller blade for EDC, I very rarely use mine on food, unless it's an apple or something, and it can be quite small for that.

The biggest thing for me with size is how it carries, though, and the tenacious is no lightweight. And I hear the persistence carries just about the same, with nearly identical weight, same thickness, and very small length difference. So if it feels the same in your pocket or on your hip, might as well have a bit more blade??? I probably just confused your decision even more, sorry haha.

If you're curious, I had my Tenacious on me when camping, when we decided to make large spears... It cut through a good size sapling like BUTTER, After I cut the tree down I just sat there in awe with how well it cut through, it was no dinky sapling... Then it cut through the second just as well :D then it shaped one quite well.

came home dull, but really easy to sharpen

I ordered from YourCornerStore.com. I liked the pricing and have heard good things about the place.

That's great, I'll bet it won't be your last Spydie. BTW, what is your initial impression of the Persistence compared to other knives you've owned?

I haven't owned any other knives before beyond the one in my Leatherman PST. But, my initial impressions are good!

-I like the size of the blade, I don't think it's too beefy or intimidating.
-I LOVE the Spydiehole. I've handled blades with a post before, and they always make me nervous because I feel like my thumb will slip and get cut. I'm not used to opening it with the hole yet, but as soon as I found Spyderco knives I knew I'd love the hole design and I do.
-I also noticed the opening movement is somewhat difficult, I'm assuming that's simply because the washers may not be broken in yet.
-The knife also is retained in the closed position pretty well, as it is is somewhat difficult to initially open, but not bad at all.
-The clip is also extremely stiff as others have said, but that's not really an issue as it can be broken in too.
-It is very comfortable in the pocket as far as its profile.
-As for weight, it is on the heavy side I guess, but I don't mind it. It gives it a feel of quality and balance. Specs say 3.3oz (FYI). Lighter than my Leatherman.
-Cutting ability also seems nice out of the box, but haven't done much yet.
-It's a good LOOKING knife all around, as I already knew :)

I'm also surprised how G-10 feels. I haven't handled G-10 before and I anticipated more of a strong rubber feel, but it is more of a tough plastic feel. It's also fine, just didn't expect it based on pictures.

All I need now is a way to sharpen it, but I might just wait til it's dull til I decide what I want to do there.

PLEASE keep in mind this is my first knife, so I don't have any other reference! Overall, I am pleased, but I've only had it for a day :P
