Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a Buck 277. Love the way it looks and am very enthusiastic about the materials used.
I will be using it for camping and hiking.

Does any one have any experience with this knife?

Thanks!

Hi Montego Chris,

I have a few of the Alpha's 277, 278, 279's. This is a very nice design. They open a smooth as butter and are very ergo during use. There are some with up grade's for blade materials and various handle materials....so if you look around you can find just about anything you want. I find the plane Jane's to work just fine for me :).

Hi jb4570,
Thanks for your reply and the pictures. They look really good.
Next time I am in a shop, I'll check the Folding Alpha Hunters in different materials. The shops I visited so far only had the 277.

Thanks for the info!

Best regards

Hi MC,

Check a few place's like Cablea's, Bass Pro Shop, and some of the on-line shopping spots like ebay and many knife shops that sell via the web!!! Note: the latter spots will have the best pricing available...IMHO.

Hi jb4570,

Excellent stuff. Thanks.
Ebay does indeed offer sweet deals.

Time for some shopping, I guess ;-)

Great knife.
But I'd take a look at the Kalinga Pro. Given a choice for one or the other, I'd go with the Pro...your mileage may vary and others on this short yellow bus may have an opinion.

Hi Buckaholic,

The Kalinga Pro is a beautiful knife. I love the fact that Buck uses s30v steel in producing them. My 151 Kaala is made of the stuff and performs really well.

Reason for my doubt is the price... There is (according to buckknives.com) a $50 difference - though this argument will probably disappear once I am in the shop comparing the two.

Thanks for the tip! (and for complicating my decision ;))

All the best

Its only money, buy one of each :D They are both great! You cant go wrong with the Alpha either!

wh4f,

A true word...
That is probably what eventually will happen... ;-)

I will first visit a well stocked store, and compare the feel of the Kalinga Pro and the various versions of the Alpha hunter.

All the best

WOW! I wish I could do that here... No such thing as a well stocked store up here any more... Mostly imports, and any USA knives are all the standard models in clam packs... I cant remember the last time I bought/handled a knife from a local store!

I don't have the Folding Kalinga (yet), but I do have the 277. I have found the 277 to be one of my top 3 favorite knife designs due to it's smooth action, quality of manufacture, feel and blade steel. I simply can't say enough good things about the 277.

Hi wh4f,

To my surprise, I found that there are quite a number of outdoor shops that actually stock the models I am thinking of buying. This is surprising as this is Europe, and there are only very few shops that sell knives (it is getting better and more models are appearing in various shops here).

A.P.F., Thanks for the info. I must say that both the Folding Kalinga and the 277 stuck out as excellent knives that both contain what I look for in a knife. The steel, the wood, the shape are excellent. Quite different than the 110 and 112 I own.

As ever, the chase is as much fun as eventually buying and owning the knife...

Best regards

I paid $30 'closeout' at Wally World for a #279 several years ago, with every intention to replace the rubber grips with some Dymondwood - easy to accomplish, due to the Torx screws holding the rubber grips on. I never did it... and, I don't miss the upgrade steels (ATS34, 154CM, S30V)... the 420HC has worked well. I believe they still carry it - and so did Academy - $33-$37. Consider that for an outdoor 'user' - nylon sheath included. Save the extra money for the finest, form-fitting, functional, and most beautiful, please don't shoot me my fellow 110 afficionados, folder Buck makes - the #419 Folding Kalinga Pro (S30V). Yeah, it's worth it.

well i have one that is a user and i do use it!
it opens with a flick of the wrist..
rock solid lock up..
passed spine wack test
takes a good long lasting edge
it feels heavy but is not realy heavy jest feels that way...
needs a belt sheath...
scale of ten this is a 8.5
wide blade and wider handle is why lower rateing
i like the slime fit of a 110 or a 500...
enjoy..

Monty: The folding Alpha is a great knife as others here have posted. The leather sheath is also top notch.

Here are some pics of my 277:

Hi all,

The Kalinga Pro is a beautiful knife... I like its shape. It is a bit fancier than e.g. the Alpha Hunter... This on the other hand may not be as snazzy, but it looks like a solid worker. It now comes down to the hard task of doing the actual shopping :D.

All, Thanks for all the pictures and the feedback and experiences. You have all been very helpful. As soon as I have bought one of the two (or... if I cannot make up my mind... both), I will certainly post pictures.

All the best

Ya' know, there aren't any pics comparing both knives, in the same pic... Not to twist your arm or anything :D

I gather that you have figured out that the leather and cordura sheaths are both vertical and horizontal carry.:thumbup:
