Thinking of buying a Spyderco

Hello everyone,

I am thinking of buying a Spyderco knife. I currently carry an Emerson CQC-7A, and a Cold Steel Voyager 4" Tanto. I have many knives that I switch off for EDC, I'm looking for the blade to be 3-4 inches long non serrated. It too will be used for self defence. I was also thinking of buying a friend of mine a Spyderco Byrd Flight, he will just use it as a small pocket knife. I really don't know alot about Spyderco Knives so any and all advice would greatly be appricated. Thank you very much.

The Endura and Delica have been the archetypal plebian tactical folder pretty much since they were introduced; if you're looking for a spyderco they'd be your first start. The newer models are stronger than ever, with tough steel and reliable designs. Their size is within your specifications; the Endura is an average sized tactical folder and the Delica is slightly smaller. Plus, the newer Enduras and Delicas can be had with an Emmersonesque wave feature on the blade, which you might take well to if you're an Emmerson fan. Aside from these, consider a few of the models made from H1 steel; if you're working near water, especially salt water, you'd appreciate a knife that doesn't rust ever.
(Lastly, IMHO, if an Emmerson is within your price range, I'd suggest you take a look at the Chris Reeve Sebenzas before buying a new knife. Just my two cents.)

Spyderco Chinook III. Tough as hell, stabs good in reverse grip edge out, strong lock, 4 way positionable clip. All good all the way around.
And non-serrated.

Spyderco has a pretty varied line of knives. A little more info about what you are looking for would help with suggestions. Do you like / prefer the G-10 handles like the CQC-7 has? Would you object to a FRN (plastic) handle? What kind of blade style and shape do you like and wht do you see yourself using the knife for? That hould help nail down a good choice for you. The Delica and Endura are mainstays in the Spyderco line. They will both be offered with G-10 handles in the near future so if that is a factor you may want to look for those models. The Military is a sweet knife with a long blade at 4" but it is a fairly narruw and this blade. The Manix has a much broader blade and is a much thicker knife in the same size. I like the Military for more of an EDzc knife where the manix is a knife I use for camping chores.

Good luck with your choice. No matter what you choose it is hard to go wrng with a Spyderco. For the record I am an Emerson fan myself favoring the CQC-15 for a carry choice but right now the Spyderco Military is gracing my pocket.

Think no further. Spyderco makes some of the finest knives on the market and you'd only be kidding yourself if you said you weren't missing out.

The knife you are looking for is the Spyderco Military. As long as you're using it as a knife and not as a screwdriver or a prybar it will serve you well and without fail.

The Delica 4 and Endura 4 are also excellent but the Millie is hands-down my favorite Spyderco. The Caly3 is also a favorite but not built for the (ab)use the Millie is.

You can't go wrong with the Endura and/or Delica. Both are great quality, relatively low cost hard working knives. Their advantage to most other Spydies is the variety of handle materials, colors and steels both are available with. Since you mentioned SD, both have trainers available. Though you can't go wrong with any Spyderco knife IMHO.

Cheers,
Rob

It all depends..how much do you wanna spend?

As a first Spydie and for what you asked for, I think an Endura is a good way to go.

Of course, a Manix is great, too, as a bunch of the current lineup of Spyderco.

But the Endura is in its 4th generation and available in quite a few flavours. Pick the one you like best! You WILL have a great well-designed knife you can rely on.
If you want the ULTIMATE knife, wait for the G-10 flat ground Foliage Green Endura. This will be one of a kind; and _I_ will buy one for sure

Let us know how you'll decide!

A Spyderco Military in your choice of S30V, D2, or BG-42, represents an excellent tactical folder. Well worth a look if you haven't already.

Consider a Para Military, 3/4 size Military, compression lock, and fits large hands well. Over all a great knife.

 +1 to the millie
the ultra thin tip & long handle do offer some nice advantages for SD
