I'm brand new here and am thinking about getting a becker bk7 as a starting point to what will probably a knife buying addition :D

Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions in terms of which model I should get? I've read nothing but good things on the bk7 so far

My use for the knife - around camp and out in the field hunting larger game like moose and deer...

And does anyone know of a good source for buying one of these?

Don't own a 7, but I suppose the somewhat smaller tweeners could do better at field dressing. I'd suggest getting a 16 or 15 instead, and a 4, 5 or 9 for the larger camp tasks. If you wanna find al traits in one blade, you know there will be compromises. Hence my suggestion to get two blades instead that cover all the basics.

Fyi, the 15 and 4 are on sale in the webshop of another forummember and beckerhead(Dexwithers). You could get two great knives for the price of one... Get 'em while you can.

First off,Welcome Phase1! This is a great community with awesome people and if you stick around here, you will definitely become addicted to Becker Knives!

Personally I do not care for the 7. That's just my opinion tho. Many people love that blade. I used to love it too before I got the entire Becker Collection.

I say go for the Bk-10 instead. The BK-12 (RSK MK2) would be my first choice, but it is a little more expensive and you can probably get two Becker's for that price.

I am a hunter too and usually skin my deer with the BK-16. Then process the meat with the BK-15.

When I am cutting up my steaks and large pieces of meat to package for the freezer, I use the BK-5. Works amazingly!

You really can't make a bad choice and before long you will have all of them so just pick one you like and go for it!

for your 1st Bk, the bk7 might be a good choice as it fall in between a few consideration. its lesser of a chopper and kinda short to bash a path with while the size and length makes processing your hunt with a bit of challenge compared to a 15/16/17 or a 11/14/24. dun get me wrong that 7 is lousy. it might not be the best for those task, its a good compromise piece to have for a starter till you get something else later.

i went for a BK9 for my first too and followed by a 14 and now awaits my 16 thou I have a DPX HEFT 4 assault currently.

but from what i notice here .. somehow tend to get probably a 9 1st then pair it with 16 next.

I do have the 7 on my to get list thou its not among the 1st few since i already have some around or shorter. The 9 fix my needs a bit more so it depends on the kinda task you do and see if you wanted something more specific for a certain roles or one that covers a few.

Interesting - ya for the 1st blade i was thinking of something a bit heavier that i could quarter, chop some wood etc until i can get it back to camp where i can process it with somewhat finer tools.... so i guess I'm looking more for something along those lines

That being the case, you would say the bk-10 - any particular reason? I see that it's a little shorter than the bk7?

I'm not a hunter, so I can't give you any feedback on that portion. I also don't own the BK7, but do own ones larger and smaller.

The BK7 is a great knife (as are all the beckers). For wood processing tasks, the BK7 should be fine for the most part. Its not going to chop wood as well as a BK9 or BK4, but it will do it better than the BK10. Its not going to carve as well as a BK16, or process meat as well as the BK5 or 15. However, its big enough to baton anything reasonable in length and is more maneuverable than the BK9. But it won't baton as well as the BK2.

Its kind of an "in between" blade, which is why many people tend to say they have other favorites for different tasks.

BUT, if you get it as your first one you will know which one will better suit your needs. You also might find its perfect for you. If you don't find it perfect, you can always sell it, as they keep their value pretty well.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

The BK7 is nice. I prefer the 9 and 10 though. The 9 is big enough to handle pretty much anything but light and nimble enough to take on the small things. One camping trip I used it to make some kitchen utensils that we forgot to bring. You could dang near use it for everything.

I just don't think the 7's added length is practical enough to justify carrying it. It may chop a little better than the 10 but if you are going to chop, get the 9 or 4.

The 12 can chop as good as the 7 and it is a better blade shape.

What I mean is, because of the clip on the 7, you really can't use the extra length to baton. You can but it will chew your baton to pieces really quick.

So as far as usable blade length for batoning, the 7 only has maybe 1/4 inch more usable length than the 10.

Now the 12 on the other hand is a way better woods blade and you can baton all the way down to the tip.

Since it's a little shorter than the 7, it handles way better for smaller tasks as well.

BK-9, BK-7, Bk-12, BK-10, Modded BK-10

With the prices on the BK-4 so good right now, you may want to get one of those for wood processing and a BK-16? Or a BK-15, smoking deals on those too.

So basically in my experience, I just prefer the other blades. Don't get me wrong, the 7 will do just fine, and you may love it. I also am not a fan of clip points for a woods knife. If you look in the picture at my modded 10, you can see that I ground down the clip so I have a thicker and more usable point for my needs.

And if I was gonna have to skin or quarter out an animal in the field, the smaller length of the 10 would be easier for me personally to use. You can still baton it thru cartilage and stuff.

But really if you are looking to do more wood processing, then maybe the 7 will be a little better choice over the 10?

I can't believe that bigghoss didn't say that you can't not do not have no 9.

Right on - thanks guys!

I can quickly see that I will probably need to get more than 1 knife and the bk9 may have to be the one to get the ball rolling....

The people who do camp stuff are more qualified to speak to your need than I am. I'm a hiker and so would like my knife to serve as a weapon if need be and the 7 has way more potential in that regard than the 10 -- IMHO. I'm still in the process of determining which BK I'll carry most often. I was rating the BK12 ahead because of the sheath but then I got a more suitable sheath for the 7. For me its not cumbersome or awkward to carry on the belt and I like it a lot. It may end up as my favorite Becker, but consider the source: former Marine who hikes. You should listen to the others and not me. ;)

well in terms of carrying a knife all day long on a hike or in the field does the weight/length difference between the bk7 and bk9 come into play at all in terms of a trade off between the two? i would imagine i'd be carrying them on my belt where i could get to it if needed...

The 9 isn't terribly heavy but I've never worn it on my belt all day. I carry it on a strap over my shoulder. I usually carry a revolver on my hip which is much heavier than the BK9 so the 9 wouldn't be an issue for me personally.

One reason I would get the 7 is quite close to yours. I might just get a custom sheath done and keep this pieces mounted horizontally on my back to the belt. It will not leave me when I go about during my hiking or camping trip. My thought of it was more combat and self defense in case of attack by wild animals or who knows what emergencies we might get ourselves in and the other knifes are no where around u. I'm using the DPX HEFT4 for this now and it's kinda short and more suited for smaller tasks.

I haven't ever tried wearing the sheath for the 9 all day, but I have done it for a few hours at a time, and it hasn't bothered me. BUT, I have modified the sheath a bit to make it carry higher on my hip. The stock sheath was so long I got annoyed with it slapping my leg when I moved around. Here is what I did to it if you're interested.

But the weight difference isn't huge, at least not noticeable IMO.

Good luck choosing :p.

Personally, I have the 2,7 and 15 on the way. I think of the 7 more as a combat knife than anything, so usually it doesn't make it into my woods bag. However, it can be used for it, if there is nothing else. I prefer a small hatchet, mine is a fiskers, and my 2 and 15 will handle the rest. For hunting I take my swing blaze. I really wish I had a 9, and it's definitely on the list. If I had it to do all over again, I would have went with the 9 first, then 2 or 16, then 15. I feel with those 3 knives you could live out the rest of your days and not have a need anymore , but want is another story!

I carry the 9 on my belt all day 2/3 of the time I'm in the woods. Doesn't bother me at all, unless your planning on literally "running" around alot the size gets annoying. I know for a fact I could skin and quarter a deer with the 9 fairly easily. I might just do that this year just cause. The 9 is my favorite fixed blade. It's thin and slicey enough to do delicate things and powerful enough to chop and moderately pry the s^&* out of anything. 2 is also a great knife though off and on weither I love it more than the nine or not.Fatter and heavier than the 9 but shorter . So doesn't chop or slice as well as the 9 or 7. If you got the $ get the 12 . Will get one someday. 10 not bad option either from what it looks like thought never had one. The 7 is a great knife too. Had one but got rid of it cause didn't like the camillus model. I think you would find it to be great for all things you were wanting to do. I'd go with 9 or 7 for hunting and doing camp stuff. Your gonna end up with them all though. Becker's are more addicting than crack.:D Good luck choosing your first one.

As mentioned, its gonna be hard to live with just one Becker.
Nothin wrong with the 7 & it's a middle of the road knife that will cover many bases.
As Dex said tho...the 12 is very sweet as well.
Good luck & welcome.

If there is an option to get a 4 and a 15 for close to the same price as a 7, I would jump all over that. For one, who wouldn't want two knives instead of just one!?!? Second, I got a 7 first because I'm a folder guy and thought it would be cool to try a fixed blade, now I have over half the Becker line and the 4 and 15 are two of my absolute favorite knives period.

Long story short, if I could do it over again I would get the 4 & 15 over the 7.
