Yeah....the 7 is the right length for the "combat" part, but its design kinda impedes it's usefulness in the "utility" department, IMO. The more I use my 4, the more I like it. The 9 or 4 and a 16 or 15 will take care of everything you might need doing. Of course, it didn't stop me from buying a 7 just the same. It sat, de-scaled and unused, until I worked up the stones to do this:
I kinda wanted to emphasize the "combat" part....and add some real world utility by turning the lanyard hole into a "tactical" beer opener. If you get the 7 first, you'll use it, for sure. Then, like so many of us here, you'll wonder what the 9 (or the 4, or the 2 or 12 or 10....you get the idea) is like, and you'll discover that there are more task specific knives (the 12 is actually my favorite all-rounder) that you end up using more. I think most of the responses kinda illustrate that point. I got a 9 first, tho I was looking at the 7 pretty hard. A 4 and a 15 from Dex right now are an absolutely smoking deal, and I doubt you'd regret getting either (though the 4 requires a commitment to use it and get used to it.....but oh BOY is it a great blade). That being said, do what you're gonna do....if the 7 is just screaming "take me home" to you then by all means do.....we know it won't be your last Becker - *a nod's as good as a wink to a blind man, if ya know what I mean* - not by a long shot.
I'm surprised that the 2 hasn't been mentioned more as a great first do-all knife....it's chunky, but it'll slice and dice and it's great for processing firewood. Plus the drop point and blade shape (has been proven (by others, not me) to be perfectly useful as a game knife (I'm talkin' to you, CRYPTC....). Just to add another suggestion....
