Thinking of getting into knifemaking.

Seriously run. Or buy 10 knives from makers here. It will cost about the same as making a few yourself.

WOW I wish the tools in my shop were as cheap as 10 knives from the makers here, and there are a lot of really good makers here.

Seriously, make a knife with just a couple of files and a drill, if after the first two you like it, then think about the next one.

Too high-tech!:p

If we had a stock-removal knifemaking contest wherein you can only do freehand grinding on a curb, I think we'd all be amazed at what could be accomplished!:)

I was thinking about this exact thing. If you want a power grinder prop your car door open and press and drag the steel on the pavement while you drive. ;-)

I was just fooling with him. I do agree, on the files and drills.

By costs though, I meant: time, knife material, handle material, rivet material, epoxy, acetone, respiration protection, heat treat, sand paper, polishing papers, tru oil/CA, blade sharpening tools, leather, leather dies, awl, bone folder, thread, thread hole punch, tooling, sealant, and did I mention time. :P

That does not include the drills, files, grinders, ovens, anvils, or any other tooling involved.

I probably made almost 50 knives before I made one I'd carry and use. Course this was before the interwebz, only had Goddard's books and magazines as guidance. I suck at knifemaking so it took me awhile ;) course a lot of people would say I still suck, can't say I disagree.
