Thinking of getting my first really large Vic. What's your choice?

Well, made an impulse buy -wasn't going to do it either, but then they lowered the price. I got a Swiss Champ for $53 from a good ebay vendor that I got a good deal from on a OHT in the past. Plain red, probably the new magnifying glass, but what the heck. Might have to find a pouch for it too if I end up using it a lot. :)

I got myself a Ranger a month ago and found the first surprised use of the metal saw (to turn the door knob of the door without the handle bar), never thought the saw would be of any use in a urban enviroment, now I have just ordered a SwissChamp after reading this thread, would be interesting to find out other usage of the fish scale.

Oh, another tool I think would be cool for the big SAKS is the serrated main blade in addition to the plain one. I think it was a Spartan I saw at a Target store that had a serrated blade... would be a nice touch.

wenger has the Serrated HIghlander which is pretty much a tinker with a serrated blade
i've got one around here somewhere...

First of all, the thing you don't want to do with the Swisschamp fish scaler is scale fish. Years ago, I did it once, found it didn't work as well as using the main blade, and spent the next week or so cleaning and deodorizing all the nooks and crannies where fish debris loves to hide. What bums me most is that I actually had a choice that day, but I just had to show off my Swisschamp. Well, lesson learned. It's always best to use a fixed blade for the job, but if all you have is a folder, make sure it's a kind that's easy to clean.

Actually, I don't hate the scaler at all, find it useful for a number of purposes; measuring small things, spearing foods (firm ones like chicken parts or pickles, not reliable on meatballs), but what I use it for most is as a probe for examining things I can't or don't want to touch with my fingers. Then, of course, I always clean the scaler before using it on food by carefully wiping it on my jeans. You can't be too cautious about germs. ;)

I have a swisschamp xlt, it has just about everything you could ever want but its a little heavy 8oz. I got a sheath for it and that helped alot for carrying it around.

Have had a Wenger Tool Chest Plus for about 15 years; it has about everything you would need, but obviously I paid alot less back then.

Swisschamp, as said, it carries weight for being one of the flagship product of SAK, and the weight-to-tool ratio is great.

The last post in this thread was from October 2012... somkind of necromancy, but that´s just my opinion. I think the OP has almost found his knife/tool.

Yes, that 2012 post was mine. Then, while I turned my attention to something else, someone replied. Isn't that the way it's supposed to work?
