Thinking of Maglite

Get a regular incandescent Maglite and put a Malkoff replacement LED bulb into it. Malkoffdevices.com

Swapped the Lux3 to a SSC P4 U2SVOH in my magLED module and couldn't be happier. Bright as anything right away and under prolonged useage dims the led a bit which inadvertantly conserves battery power. Great all around light when big size is a good thing (eg: Getting a truck out of the mud or some such thing). Plus the scratch-prone red ano looks so nice... for now...

I like MagLites, used the Mini (2xAA) for many years until the LED AA came out. Only recently I got a Led Lenser. For a long time I stayed away from those nice, small and super bright little lights because they used camera batteries. I figured I could get dozens of regular batteries for the price. But my Led Lenser accepts 3xAAA so that's not an issue anymore.

My only beef with Mini MagLite was the twist action that I dislike. So I'm not going back, I like the button action much more. I had a Micro AAA too but it was puny, a Photon could outperform and outshine it, so I gave it away.

Never had anything bad to say about the bigger models. I got a 3D some 14 years ago, it's still in one piece. The LED conversion rocks, I got one of those as soon as they became available.

I don't know if it's the light or the batteries, but sometimes my big Maglite "leaks", the batteries die without any use. So now I unscrew the tail cap just enough to break contact when I'm not using the flashlight for a long time, like for the summer.

They are tough and good. Get one.

jorski, those leaking batteries in the mags are one of the reasons people actually prefere "camera batteries" as they are a lithium cell an have more than double the shelf life of an alkaline (or "regular") battery without the leakage issue. Particularly good shelf life when comparing cold-temp useage and storage. I love my 3D MagLED, but I've long since switched to a basic Surefire G2 for my car. Fits neatly in the glovebox and the batteries have been in there for two years summer and winter and they still are going strong!

Aw, heck, two years is nothing. The batteries in my Surefire are at least five years old.

Yep, I have a 3-D cell mag-light that got converted to LED with one of the conversion kits. The LED seems to run forever on a set of batteries. Its a great flashlight for throwing in the vehicle or on a boat. Never seems to give me problems. The D-cell ones have the button on them, which I agree with the other posts, works much better then the ring on/off on the mini-mags.

Doesn't throw light as well as the fancy flashlights, but it is robust, relatively inexpensive and works forever when powered by them big batteries.

same deal here; conversion to LED recomended...3d cell not as good as the 4d for head cracking but good enough...

I've got a mini maglite I've had for years as well as a LED mini, never had problems with either. I've got multiple 2,3,and 4 D with regular Krypton bulbs but haven't tried the LED in them yet, never had a problem with any of them and have had the D models for a long time. Maglite is hard to beat unless you want to expense a Surefire.

Maglite makes tough lights for sure.
One of my uncles has been in the pest control business for as long as I can remember.

He has a 3 or 4 D cell light...it was black once, it's been in service so long 80 percent of the anodizing has worn off!

The light I was carrying in my pocket at the time blew it away power wise, but life span is as yet unproven...

I keep a 4D LED Maglite in my truck.

It's a good cheap alternative, and the output is great. Plus if you ever need to thump someone, it makes for a pretty good club.

:thumbdn:on maglights ability to light up anything and stay away from the niteize stuff. Waste of money IMO. I however have a 2D mag that i upgraded with the terralux setup and it works fantastic for 20 bucks. good beam pattern also or you could go with the 700 lumen upgrade but is a little overkill for most people.

I put the xenon bulbs into out 3D cell mags. Fantastic throw of a beam a set of batteries lasts a year and then get relegated to kids toys (whether I like it or not the kids know where to pillage). That stops the problem of leak. As yet I can't justify LED upgrade.
