Thinking of pulling the trigger on a Sebenza

I noticed in one of the other threads, Alan Davis. Those look amazing and it seems they are intended as work knives as well as works of art. The $650 mark is about the ceiling of my budget. I want a work knife first, being a work of art is secondary only to being a work knife. I'll look at the Andre' knives. The reason I've started with the Sebenza is that it seems to a knife that most people agree upon as being a strong work horse high end knife. Unfortunately I do not have anyway to get a hands on with any of these knives and I'm trusting on your recommendations here as users and owners. My knife will not be babied; but will be well cared for as I do all my knives. I depend on them completely to preform as they are intended, being out in the field working, camping, at home or in the kitchen.

Thank you all again for all your advice and input. As I have no experience with the higher end of these knives I am at your mercy.

Thank you again, Jeff.

I believe all CRK Damascus blades are now SS so rust shouldn't be an issue unless you plan to store it in a tidal pool or something. While I don't have a Micarta CRK I do have several other knives (and pistols) with Micarta scales (and grips); it is an excellent material and very sturdy.

My EDC of several years is a small regular Sebbie with a ladder Damascus blade. I'm in IT too so we probably have similar usages. The only wear I have seen besides the patina on the outside is where the dark oxidation and coating has worn off the blade by the point. Must have been cutting all that foam core for rack blanking panels . . .

Jeff, if it must be a workhorse first and foremost ("art" secondary concern) my advise would be to look at the large Starbenza as mentioned earlier. It has more character than the normal Sebenza. I've got one and I can assure you you won't be disappointed. They go for about $470 (KnifeArt). That will save you $180 if your ceiling is $650. The $470 Starbenza will do everything the $650 version can do. If however the "art" (beauty) element is still a strong factor then the $180 must pay for it (the damascus used). In my mind $180 can do a lot of things the beauty of the damascus can't.

What is the difference between the Starbenza and the Sebenza I'm looking at this one http://www.bladehq.com/item--Chris-Reeve-Large-Sebenza-21-Knife--19897, or this one, http://www.knifeart.com/dase4.html or, http://www.knifeart.com/wilsoncombat1.html or, http://www.knifeart.com/dase5.html. or, http://www.knifeart.com/longview.html http://www.knifeart.com/desertblossom.html which of these. If the Henry's are just show then I'll take which ever sebenza or starbenza you all think. If it was your money. .. which one.

Go ahead and get yourself that micarta inlayed damascus Sebenza.
The micarta will not come off. I'll recomend you a large Sebenza.
The damascus should be fine too if cared for.

Especially during wintertime I prefer an inlayed Sebenza to the plain handle (feels more comfortable).

Pleae let us know how you deceide.

WHs are far from just show with their ZDP core and excellent build quality, but if I'm going to buy a knife to work hard, I'm going with a Sebenza.

And the WHs you have linked have 2" blades. Unless I was in some super restrictive area on a daily basis, I'd want a little more than that for a work knife.

OK, so it's a stainless Damascus and not the traditional carbon steel cable hammered. With normal care given to any pocket knife this will preform well? Currently my daily carry is a Spyderco 154CM Manix and Vic Alox Rancher I believe, it has the saw. Anyway, this will be my onetime big knife purchase/fathers day gift for myself. I just want to make sure I won't have to worry about the double sided tape failing from our coastal "sprinkle" torrential rain encountered out here. We have Moss on our backs out here, from the rains. Not quite tropical rain forests, yet we are in a rain forest region. This will be a tidy bit a money for me, but I'm expecting this to be a knife I'll be able to carry and depend on for quite some time. Thanks for all your input.

I was looking at the small version as well; but being 6'1" and weighing in a tad over an 1/8 th ton I've got big paws and figured the small may be a bit to small. My Manix fits my hands well. If that is any indication. I've ordered some tritium beads from across the pond to adorn my new purchase. So if the consensus is non Damascus, then maybe the pain handle too? Arrgh decisions. If you all were buying, which one would it be?

Or is there any other recommendations for a one time high end folder purchase?

Thanks, Jeff

Don't worry about the "double sided tape failing"... CRK uses VHB tape and it's amazing stuff. It'll stand up just fine to your weather.

OK. Damascus Micarta it is. I didn't notice the WH's were 2" blades. Maybe next time I'm feeling rich that'll be my going to the movies knife. That copper Damascus blade looks really nice. I'd almost be afraid to use it. I had a gorgeous Browning 243 lever action rifle. I had it a week. Where I used to hunt you didn't take pretty things. Took it back and bought a Stainless Mini 14... It took all the punishment one could give and it came out smiling every time unscathed, and asking for more. I sure miss that weapon. Sebenza it is. Thanks. I'll post picks when I get it .

Again thanks for all your advice and input.

Jeff.

Bought the Basket Weave Micarta Seb. Found a Blue Ti CRK Bead Lanyard for it. I had ordered some Trit/Ti beads for it from the UK; got $crewed on that deal, now going through PayPal to try and recover my $300. Good news though, I've got a custom hand~made ELB Damascus Rhino on the way!
