Thinking of starting a knife

I contacted a local metal seller who sells custom lengths of steel. The piece I bought was a piece of scrap O-1 that they had left over from a different purchase. They put it on a scale and said Five bucks. I promptly said I'll take it and at the same time I think I had a "wow" look on my face.

You're a lucky guy to find a deal like that. I've got some O1 that I got from a local machine shop that amounted to just a bit less than that and it was $20. Once I get a few more knives under my belt, I have a piece of that O1 set aside to be a knife for the machine shop owner.

Stay friendly with that supplier! :)

You might consider to buy kit e.g. - something like small bowie or puuko kit - ready blade, piece of wood, brass bolsters and all together.
There are companies which are selling them.
Then you get the idea for starting from scratch....

I start all of my patterns in cardboard- very easy to make changes to your design. I usually do 5 or 6 patterns- each with minor changes to see what I like or dislike and finalize the pattern.
Might help you out.
