Thinning a Sodbuster

I have a Queen Country Cousin and would like the thin the handle down about .040~.050 a side. So the question is there enough of a taper or countersink to hold the pins in place if I take the material off or will the pins get loose and handles fall off when I sand the heads down? Of course I will keep the handles cool during the sanding so the heat won't melt the scales, etc.
