Thinning out my collection and it feels good!

While I've pared down the number of knives, the value (replacement cost) has gone up, as I buy more expensive knives now, but less frequently, and have given away 4 production knives recently.

By today's prices, only two are under $100 and the rest over $150. Hard to believe I bought my PM2 for $105 new. That was 9 years ago. They are what, $185 now?
The prices of knives are a bit crazy these days.

Its funny, but because of this, I'm more willing to spend money on custom/semi-custom knives. Many seem to not have been affected by inflation as much as production knives, probably because many of the big corporations are being greedy and trying to take advantage of the inflation by inflating prices more.

I see a ZT for $350 and am like, well, a Cheburkov is not that much more, has better action, better heat treatment (IMO) and is more exclusive.

Funny, I just paid almost $350 (a bit more) for a ZT!

All jokes aside, I love slimming down the collection. I have two rules I usually abide by: (1) if I do not carry it for an extended period of time, it'll likely be on the chopping block soon, and (2) if I somehow have more than 24 knives in my collection, there must be a cut, as my Nalpak only holds 24!

It's true. I'd rather pay more for a Chris Reeve or something similar than say a Spyderco or Benchmade.

If CRK had tool steel I would agree. But I still think Spyderco is a great value compared to other brands.

It all comes down to preference though and there is no real wrong.

I myself am down to around 9 knives and finding it more difficult to justify anything else.

I have 21 modern folders and 12 GECs. I have other knives... SAKs, Leathermans, sentimental Case and Buck knives, ETC. But those 33 are the ones I put pressure on myself to carry. As a thought experiment, this year I started keeping track how many times in a year a knife gets carried. Here we are almost in July, and I have 14 knives I have not carried for even a day. Some of these knives would be considered "favorites" by me as well. Others have only been carried one or two days. I do anticipate having all of them carried by the end of the year. But it begs the question, how much do I really need to keep a knife that is carried once a year? I am not sure what will come of this little study, but it has really gotten me thinking. Another welcome consequence is that I have bought less knives this year than i have in years. I just cannot bring myself to buy new stuff when I have excellent knives that I know I like sitting in drawers.

That kind of experiment will lead to, and can only lead to, one thing: the realization that for every day task, you only need one knife.

That's why I stay away from experiment like this 🤣

Lately I’ve sold off a bunch that were just too hard for me to open. Mostly Camillus electricians knives. Couple Kleins. Yesterday I gave my supervisor a Remington 9501 that was just too hard sprung for me. We were working on a motor and I couldn’t get it open and handed it to him and said open this thing please. He yanked it open no problem. It’s his now and good riddance! Sad part was he didn’t even have a knife to carry before I give it to him.

I like Spyderco a lot, but they're getting a little pricey, IMO.
The real value comes from the sprint runs. Those are priced so well. And considering the rest of the market I feel they still have a place. Plus you know you are getting good steel with a good heat treat.
