Hello everyone. I finished up my third knife last week and thought I'd share it with all of you. I wanted to try some file work and my own mosaic pins with this one, and I think it turned out pretty good; I'm proud of it. I still have yet to put my secondary bevel on it, as I am in PA right now and left my combination India stone at home. I'll get the edge on it as soon as I get home in a week.

Here are the details:
Full Flat Grind - 1084 steel (1/8" thickness)
OAL - 7 1/4"
Blade length - 3 1/4" (Cutting edge - 3")
Handle length - 4"
Handle material - Desert Ironwood
Handle pin material - 1/4" homemade mosaic pins

That is a first class job, and I can't spot one thing to critique.

Kudos on getting your rivets aligned with both pointing at 12:00. very Professional looking.

I'm normally not a fan of filework but this is great! One thing I did notice is there seems to be some epoxy in some of the deep filework on the handle.

That epoxy was a real pain with the handle area. I kept on it for about a half hour or so until the epoxy started to harden. Once I set it down, clamped for the next 24 hours, I said in my head that I knew epoxy was going to find its way into those spots. Something for me to think about the next time I try more file work. Maybe I'll stop it just before the handle next time rather then go down to the butt.

Bomp and Chavez, thanks for the comments.

Really a fantastic job. The finish on the handle is awesome. Next time maybe just fill the file work in the handle area with epoxy tinted to the handle material and sand the whole thing flush. Was that you first crack at file work?

Yes, Sir. First crack at file work. Thanks for the comments on handle finish. I was debating with what to do and actually used TruOil on the desert ironwood. I put a few coats on and did a final buff to bring out the grain. It worked pretty well and I was hesitant due to the oily nature of the wood.

I can't stop looking at this knife. Looks like it should be under glass in a gallery with two armed guards.
O.k. what do you have to have for it Sgt. John, what would it cost me to call it mine ?

I was very taken with the grain of the ironwood matching the curve of the handle. Very nice effect.

Well thought out and very well executed. Get home and get going on #4 I want to see it.

Thank you.

@Frank - I was lucky to get a good pair of scales from Jantz that I could use to match to the basic design.

@Horsewright - I can't wait to start on the next one. I'll definitely post it when finished.

Well done.
The ironwood came out just beautiful.
Nice, consistent pattern on the file work too.
Perhaps you could fill in the file worked area with something like wax? And then after the epoxy sets take a heat gun and melt it back out.

Thanks drlozier. I appreciate the comments.

@leifjl - that is a great idea with the wax! I will definitely try that next time and thanks for the comments. I definitely took my time with the file work since you basically get one shot at it.

I would suggest keeping the handle area filled with epoxy. It prevents the recesses from getting filled with crud. Clear epoxy is fine. It looks almost black, as it is not backlit.
