third most important survival item?

Instant water! Just add water :D

Have you not seen the Ad ?

It's time to stop the insanity and insist on a better quality of life. Stop drinking tap water. Stop drinking well water. Refuse to touch water from desalination plants. And remember that mountain spring water is a disaster waiting to happen. Do you know how many people and animals urinated in your spring water, upstream? Yes, it's disgusting to think about (perhaps even humorous), but it happens. So stop drinking it. Insist on only one natural substance... Dehydrated water.

Unlike traditional water bottling facilities who bottle water only from one specific region, we have designed an innovative blending system that harnesses and compresses the benefits of waters ranging from the French Alps to the Rocky Mountains. Our 27-step process bonds the molecules and rigorously blends the waters together. It then secretes the water molecules and harvests them for the final stage. Once ready, the substance is introduced to the environment and the excess vapors are released. The remaining substance is pure, natural, dehydrated water.

I was just looking over my last posting, and was thinking, i did not say the reason i did not pick a sigalling tool as part of my gear.

The reason is easy, if i have a good steel knife in good sun light i can get the eye of most people with in just under 1/2 mile away, and on top of that any three fires in a roll about 10ft apart is a sigalling for help fire, in the day time, just make the fires smoke with green wood, get the fire going with dry wood, than cover it with green wood, when you see some one looking for you, or just people backpacking or camping. Most campers will call for help, if thay see this.

Next is the compass, i don't think i my self will need it, the reason is if im lost, and people know im to be back on this day, others will be looking for me, if i can i will go to the top of the tallest hill i can find, with the best open land around it and build my fires and shelter on it, so i can see the land around me, helping the others to find me.

In a good day, with a good knife. Not all knives are able to reflect, and on top of that on a bad day, with a knife that can't really reflect.....

I still stand by signaling, knife and fire are allready taken care of, make them finding you easier.

Has anyone said a heavy duty sealable freezer bag ?

I was thinking that this item can hold water while it is being treated with puri-tabs etc + the obvious of it being a means to carry the water.
It can also be sealed over some folage on a branch to gather water through evaporation or used to make a solar still.
And finally I was thinking that maybe it could be suspended near a fire to boil water !
I have not tried this but I do remember a previous link in which water was boiled in a plastic bottle that had been placed in a fire.....the science was that as long as all the air was out of the bottle then the bottle would not melt before the water had reached boiling point !!!
Anyone want to test this one out at the weekend ?

It is also far more accurate to use a proper signal mirror with a sighting hole !

Pitdod, not a bad idea, if you try it please let me know if it worked out ok. Your friend at the post Donald S.

Just noticed I never said what the third most important item would be. For me, after knife and some method of getting a fire going, I'd say compass. There are other ways to determine what direction you're going, but between clouds, trees, and panic I think they're too easy to mess up. Southern Ontario is a pretty built-up area as far as Canada is concerned so I don't know of any nearby area where a full day's walk in any direction wouldn't bring me to some semblance of civilzation (If anyone else knows of a place like that in S. Ont. please tell me of this magical place--I'd like to go camping there). With a compass to keep you from running in circles, more than one night in the bush should be unnecessary. Now that I think of it a fully charged cellphone would probably do just as well, but I guess I'm the only one who doesn't have one yet. Obviously my choice might be different if I were travelling.

Your region has the most impact on what your essentials are. For me here in Iraq, it would have to be water in my top 3.

Some essentials lists have clothing; for me, I think "appropriate" clothing should either be number one or zero...you baseline.

In an arid region, you can pretty much forego fire and replace with water. But I think cordage should be in your top 3-5 as far as essentials go.

For most other areas that are moderate, knife, firestarting and cordage would be my top three. If I'm going to an area that doesn't have adequate water, than I would swap the cordage for water (includes a container and purification/filtration...I'm cheating:D)

g33ff, from what i can see from the posting going on, all of us have about the same ideas, but we all think we will take are chances with other tools.

The reason to me is, i see in my mind the land, the tools and the survival needs my way, you see it yours, and the others, there way, but i am open to other ideas. If i was right next to you, or one of the other members in your woods and your country, i know we will see eye to eye on this gear, but i have in my mind a place i was camping at, so i don't see the needs the same way as some others on this post.

I think this is the reason for my pick, but i will say ( ALL THE OTHER MEMBERS ) on this post have and had some great, great ideas, it not just my way or the highway, any way thank you and all for you ear.

a good woman to keep you warm.
or a water purifier. You can go a ways without food but nowhere without water.

Generally speaking, a water container, that can withstand heat.

I think you're right on the money there, Donald. That's what I like about this forum. The diversity here is it's real strength. With very few exceptions the discussion is usually more about the open exchange of ideas than any one person trying to be 'right' all the time. Even in a similar environment what would be right for one person might be wrong for another depending upon where their skills and interests lie (e.g. someone with mad forest-ninja skills like DOC-CANADA might not be quite as dependent on modern methods of firestarting as am I). My choice was definitely influenced by my abilities (or lack thereof) as well as my location (1/3 of Canada's population living in the V that dips down between the great lakes). After all, a compass wouldn't do me much good if I were stuck somewhere I couln't easily walk my way out of.

Another vote for compass and map, compass if I only get one.

Finding my way home is important to me. This comes even before a knife i my book.

Some way a purifying water. Either a pot you can boil in, or a container with some type of purifying tablet or filter.
