This and That GAW

Hello Mr. glennbad glennbad !

Happy 4th and thank you for the amazing GAW!

Been a bit quiet lately traveling from place to place out of the country!

Would love to be considered for #1. For my share...a little beauty shot from Iceland (with my trusty lambsfoot).

Thanks for the chance, I'm in! - please. Throwing in a couple picture you might appreciate as a knife maker. Here is a pioneer SAK on a collimator, a focusing element for brain radiation - obviously needs to be very precise. The machining on this is very interesting. Each circular piece you see here is removable and held in place with something like ball bearings. This was being decommissioned, scrapped so gave me a rare opportunity to fiddle with it for a bit - so what does a knife guy do.... put a knife I had with me on it for a photo lol.

Next up is a picture of the barrel GEC used to make the beer barrel beer scouts. Another pic you might appreciate. I liked watching the process of turning a whiskey cask into a knife cover.

I'm in for either cap lifter preferably 1 or 5 I think it was, but open to any of them as they all look great.

Really fine GAW thank you.

I'd like a shot at No. 3 the Bruckmann, why? Choice Stag you've put on it, I like Spears and I'm fond of wine

Where I live at 64° North is a place of extreme contrasts, just lately we have the White Nights for about 8 weeks from late May to late July. Here's a picture of what it's like at 2.15 am in the morning, perpetual sun :) The other side of the medal is Nov-Jan perpetual darko_O

Knife aspect: a Spear I like, this was I think taken around 23.00

That's a beautiful spear blade Will.

Oh last call, I'm in please. I would love #2, that rams horn looks like a butterscotch candy. Thank you!
The 79 whittler is my favorite traditional knife, I have two (jobillo and kingwood) which will be passed onto my kids. They both have a great patina and are covered with my fingerprints so when they receive them to add their own fingerprints and to keep using them.

Glenn, thanks for sharing your talents in this supremely generous GAW!:cool::cool::thumbsup:
I'd like to participate if I can still get in under the wire. All the knives look great, but if I had to rank them based on personal preference I'd go with this list, starting with most desirable: 3, 2, 4, 1, 5

Here's an embarrassing experience from a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I were visiting our daughter in Minnesota, and we went to dinner at a restaurant at a golf course. I ordered the "geezer salad/soup/dessert bar" (and a beer). I started with a wonderful salad with all the fixings, then had a bowl and a half of tasty vegetable beef soup, and went back one more time to get samples of several desserts. One of the desserts I chose was what looked to me like some kind of chocolate mousse, but when I got back to our table and put a big spoonful into my mouth, I discovered that the "mousse" was actually liver pate - what a surprise that was to my expectant taste buds! o_O:eek:

Thanks again, and best wishes to all the participants! 🤓

Really nice Beerlow with great covers. If possible I'd like to put my name in for #1. I have been interested in trying out the barlow style again after passing on a case barlow some time ago.
Photo of the knife that got me started on traditional knives. I had a few others before, but this one cost more than the others and sparked the interest in traditional knives as a whole. Sadly this one was traded years ago, and several others I'd like to have back, but that is part of learning what you like and sharing the hobby with others.

My Preferences are #4 or #5 since I don't have any Stag in my growing collection.

Tales of a newbie:
6 months ago I had no interests in traditional slipjoint knives, but after reading this subform, I've become addicted (thanks guys).

  • I started by looking for whittling/carving knives and ended up with a GEC #62. But it looked so good that I didn't want to sharpen it until I learned how to do it better.
  • So I ordered some inexpensive traditional knives. Barlows, stockmen, trappers to practice sharpening and things went downhill
  • From my inexpensive knife binge I came across some vintage Boker USA knives and decided I wanted some modern Boker Solingen knives.
  • About this time, I also decided it would be nice to replaces my modern EDC with a traditional looking version so I now have a trapperliner and copperliner.
  • and I'm starting to get back to those inexpensive vintage knives (imperial barlow, stockman, camilus, ..) and have come across Glen's tutorial on working on these knives.
Thanks guys (I think) for all the ideas, support and for being an enabler on this hobby.

This is a very generous and special giveaway Glenn, glennbad glennbad ! Thank you. Your work is top notch, and you are a primo denizen of the Porch. Each of these knives is unique and precious. However, I have always been intrigued by the Trestle Pine knives but never pulled the trigger. EDIT, if I am selected for this one, please send it to afishhunter afishhunter . Or, in other words, I nominate him.

I have attached some photos from a recent work related trip to Maui as my price of admission. (I know, it was tough duty!)

I’d like to enter. I’m interested in all of them but I really like the look of #2 the best if I have to choose, or #1, heck I can’t choose those are both gorgeous. But I reckon #2 is my favorite, I keep going back and looking at that beauty. Thank you Glenn for this GAW. I think a custom knife like this is pretty special. Beautiful work.

Well, I’ll share a story about when I was growing up. Me and my cousin was whittling on the porch. I was using an alox electrician that a family friend had given me. The main blade slip around the stick and sliced my left index finger badly. Into the “I need stitches” arena but not rush home to the hospital area. So I didn’t get stitches and I healed just fine. I have about an inch long scar on my finger as a reminder to watch the blade and where it’s going. My cousin was much more upset than I was. I just wrapped my finger in a paper towel. I was about 14 at the time, we were alone, and I think I handled it real well for a kid with a heck of a gash and blood gushing.

I'm in for the trestle pine.
This is a pic of the aftermath of my bday dinner, which happens to be the 4th (same as my wife and next door neighbor!). While I was eating this a water mitigation team was cleaning up our basement from a busted water heater. We went on vacation and arrived home to a sopping wet basement. Hence the 'worry stone' ... and the tequila 🤷‍♂.
