This catalogue makes me sick.

A co-worker of mine who knows I'm into knives brought me his BudK catalogue to ask me if any of the knives in it were any good. Mostly cheap imported stuff and a few fantasy blades by United Cutlery are offered, but I also noticed a rip-off of Darrel Ralph's Krait design except with with a computer circuit board handle. There is also a knife which BudK calls the Striker which they sell for wopping $6.95, but the image is that of a Tom Anderson designed knife for Master Cutlery. You can even see Tom's name on the image. There is also a Mike Franklin rip-off and even a rip-off of the S&W SWAT folder. What makes me sick is seeing people trying to make a fast buck out of selling crap yet making it seem that it is a state of the art high quality product.

A rip off of a rip off; now that takes some real cojones.

Have you seen their rip off of Hawg knives? I think it's on the back page of the newest catalog. Has about .5" long "teeth on the blade. I must admit, I don't even see how the real Hawg knives could be useful, let alone this piece of crap.

The company always struck me as Smoky Mountain's slow-witted younger brother. If you sift through their catalog, Bud K does have some pretty good prices on low-end items, though, including dirt-cheap nunchaku, inexpensive balisongs (potentially useful for practice), sai, and a scattered sampling of Taiwanese cheapo items.

I think there's a place for low-end suppliers. Those of us who know what we're buying can find good deals on some products; those of us who don't might be disappointed, but there's always the Return Form.

It's a shame that the uninitiated might buy these products without knowing their real quality, but many of us did the same when starting on the journies that made us Knife People, and we learned from the experience.

Hey, remember "The Edge" catalog? Not only did they sell a lot of cheap crap, but they hyped it up as well. They even got me a couple of times, before I realized what quality knives were and where to obtain them.

Now we are being ridiculous. A rip-off of a SWAT. Geez...Anyway, as far as the catalogue goes, I don't think that SMKW can even be compared to the BudK catalogue. SMKW has it's fair share of crap, but also has some great deals on really awesome knives. C'mon a 35 dollar wild wild turkey or perhaps a 40 odd dollar spyderco standard!
Can't beat that,

Jedi, I remember the "Edge" catalogue very well. They were one of the first to try and over-hype the SWAT folder saying it was made in the USA of the highest quality.

Ah, but they were also the source of my first Benchmade 975SBT. True, I paid retail for it, but they were the first company to open my eyes to quality pocket cutlery. Too bad they were bought out and turned into a Sharper Image wannabe.

I have a few of them laying around here that folks have sent me!

They SUX
The least they could do is a good job on the quality!

Most of the knife connoisseurs I know usually ignore the BudK catalog. That is, unless they're shopping for glow-in-the-dark plastic Gargoyles.

Really folks - don't go shopping for Microtech's at K-Mart! You'll be disappointed there, too.

We all dislike "rip-offs." I think makers like Darrel, Emerson, Corby, Boguzewski, Terzuola, and a host of other folks would concur. When Master Cutlery asked to put my name on the knife designs I liscenced to them, I agreed - even for the "economy models."

While you might not like the product all that much, consider giving some credit to a company that acknowledges the designer. How about showing some appreciation for the manufacturers who are decent enough to do this, like with Darrel's S&W design, Franklin's Joy Enterprises designs, and Fred Carter's designs for Gigand (distributed by Master Cutlery) and United Cutlery?

Hey Tom Anderson, I saw a couple of your designs advertised in one of the lower end catalogues, and they looked real nice. If I remember, either Zytel or G10, and 440 steel. Is that true? Can you give a web adress that details the materials used in your Master designs?

The nice thing about ripping off a rip off is that you don't have to worry to much about being sued.

And to clarify, I wasn't trying to bash Smoky -- I've been a faithful customer of theirs for over a decade. I just meant that when you compare the low-end items in Smoky's catalog and the low-end items in Bud K, you see a lot of the same stuff at similar prices. The difference being, of course, that Smoky has a lot more quality products to round out the low-end merchandise.

And I'll admit it: I've purchased from Bud K before. I like cheap knives. It's a sickness.

Tom, I agree that we should acknowledge the efforts of companies who give credit to the designers like Joy Enterprises for the Mike Franklin designs and Master Cutlery for your designs. However, I did check out Master Cutlery's website (www.mastercutlery.com) and was surprised to find that they offer rip-offs of the Microtech SOCOM called the "Intruder" and a Terzuola Starmate called the "ATF". I also saw rip-offs of the Ken Onion/Colt Python called the "Cobra". What gives? Just when I thought they were being honourable.

I remember the Edge catalog and their outrageous claims too. I remember one claim about 440A blade steel being "The world's finest cutlery steel" or something like that.

Danbo, I guess some companies will say anything to make a sale. What ever happened to the Edge company? Are they still around or did they go under?
