I got a nasty finger cut from this one today I was sitting in my recliner, and grabbed the clip which was clipped to my front pocket, to pull the knife outta my pocket, and as I pulled to get the knife outta my pocket, the blade opened a little and I pulled the point into my finger. Seems this metal piece on top of the blade musta caught inside my pocket and opened the blade. Seems dangerous to me, so should I grind that that piece off to avoid unintentional opening again?

That’s a kershaw made Emerson designed knife. The little metal piece on top will catch and open the blade.

Admittedly my emerson holds itself closed because I can't figure out how to hold it without pushing the frame lock.

Carry it for a couple weeks and the slight shift to avoid the wave when you take it out of your pocket will become second nature.
will try. knda spooked about the unintentional opening, yet I am very aware now

That's one the best thing about that knife in the picture, the design and especially "The Wave".

If you don't want to activate the specialized, quicker than an automatic knife, feature, then you can simply, slowly, draw the knife out, away from the pocket's rear corner. Practice makes perfect, or so they say. I don't find it too challenging, if at all.
You can also grind it off that one, as you mentioned. As you see fit.

Some of the comments are too funny! Sometimes what is plainly obvious to one is not so much so for another... despite all of the information at fingertip's reach...

If it had been an actual Emerson, the cut/puncture would've been exponentially worse.

Cheers

Nobody I know personally would know what the wave feature is or what it is for.

For the OP, if you don’t need the feature then grind it off. I won’t tell anyone. 🤫

sho glad it wasnt, Kershaw cut was bad enough

I never carry a "Wave" Emerson in my front pockets anymore, only Non Waves...A100 Super, A100 PDW edition, early Specwar, CQC-7a, KACK the new TKO. Hoping at some point at getting my hands on an early CQC-8 non wave. Recommend carrying the Wave models in back pockets, safety but also less wear and tear on front pockets
