It seems like more and more Tactical knife guys are jumping back into Traditional knives now. I guess they're getting tired of all the bells and whistles connected with them. Either that or there's somewhat of a nostalgic surge right now. Maybe it's because more single blades are coming out now, in Traditionals? I would be interested in your spin on this, Rich. What was mentioned before is very true, but buy what you like after much deep research and contemplation. Btw, you don't have to stop just be more picky now.:D

... agreed. This forum has cost me quite a bit of money. Not 24 knives in one month kind of money though. Yikes.

I still like and carry a non-traditional as well as my SAK. I've been collecting for over 60 years, so most of my collection is traditional (fixed and folding). I like thumbstuds and linerlocks since they can be used with one hand - very useful when you are using a cane :-) I've no illusions about RR, Marble's, Colts ever being "collectible" (in my lifetime anyway). I'm just enjoying playing with some decent quality knives at a reasonable cost. BTW, I don't like non-trads which have any bells and whistles; just simple, functional knives.

Rich

Well I'm in the same boat with you then, Rich. I think I own 3 non traditional knives. 2 of which I should sell because they never get used at all! If I do carry the one, it's usually to back up my traditional.

Sorry but you're in big trouble!!! There is nothing we can do for you, If you would like to talk about it we meet at Denny's around 1 am every night. Each of us brings about 40-50 pocket knives and we just show them to each other, then go home and get online to find more. It's a very solitary life. My eyes are shot from the computer screen and lack of sleep. See ya tonight.

I'd take you up on that offer for Denny's, but we're a bit far away to do it.
Thanks for the offer. If we were closer, I just might do that, but not at 1 AM -
way past this old geezers bed time :-)

Same here I love a great modern design. But RR just plain makes fantastic users that are easy to pocket like most traditionals and when a one hand opening knife isn't needed which is most of the time for me. I love em all! For me the spirit of the knife is revealed in its utility.

Rich let me help you out…

:D

Nice shootin' tex ! :) I need to get some of that backdrop diamond plate stuff, very cool !

and Rich, Things to think about;

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.”
~ Mark Twain ~

Good luck on your quest!

The simple fact is you used to be able to buy really nice "tactical" or "modern" folder for around $100. Now the prices are closer to $500. For $500 I can have a knife built to my spec, and I have had. How anyone sells some of these knives is beyond me, because it's all marketing. The profit margin for manufacture is huge, and they pour it right back into marketing.

With traditionals you get a great knife at a reasonable price, something almost no one is going to freak out over if you need to use it, generally a more useful blade(s), and, if you collect the old ones, something you can spend some time researching and learning some interesting facts about.

After a while anyone with a little sense realizes they don't need a bottle opener that can be run over by a tank and still scare half a dozen ninjas at the sight of its special steel.

Well the good news is by the time you make it to Kansas you'll have plenty of pocket knives to show all of us. Good luck Brother. Back to the computer screen. What's the name of those drops y'all use?

Kansas?! By the time I'd make it to Kansas we'd both be dead and our knives would be rusted lumps of metal in some recycling yard.

There is no Knife Addicts Anonymous here just a bunch of shameless enablers, but there is hope.
Not much hope but a little.

My own addiction started off slowly in 2009, after six I needed a place to put them, so I cleaned out an old 2 drawer Kennedy Tool box. It held all 6 and the boxes with room to spare. Now I have room for one more and it's already picked out, a Queen Barlow with feathered bone, Just waiting for it to hit the show room shelves.

I adapted the mind set that nothing comes in unless something goes out. I've thought about which one it would be & I've decided none of them are going any where.

Just ordered some bloodwood to re-scale the Benchmade, so it will look a little less modern. I dumped the pocket clip in the first 10 minutes. Got some Rosewood and Ebony coming to rehandle two old TL-29's that have been sitting around forgotten about for years. Thinking about contacting esnyx and see if he can make a bottle opener blade out of one of the screw driver blades.

Just enjoying what I have, and making what I have better. So I'm done.

Starting out with Rough Riders and Colts are a good thing. They aren't bad knives for the price; not at all. You'll bump up to Case and then Queen/S&M, and then GEC and Canal Street Cutlery. It's coming, just warning you..... even if you don't need them. Customs come later, much later for me as I'm still trying to talk myself into one.

Also, wait until you start going to shows and you know all those guys that have piles of old used slip joints..... when you begin REALLY looking, you're dead. You are hopelessly addicted to slip joints. All of those knives almost make your head spin when you don't really know what you're looking at, then you start the research so you are better armed to make a decision. Oh my.
