This guy is a genius!

I have made one and it works pretty good; to keep it from blowing away, I just staked down the foot end and entered from the head. Once in, I just lightly staked it down from the inside. If you're over 6', you'll most likely have your feet poking out unless you sleep in the fetal position. For areas without a lot of trees to make a typical hootch, the shock-corded poles help for making a shelter when there isn't much natural material around to improvise.

Another nice feature that I actually tried is that it can be used as a pack-boat if you have to cross a lake or deep, slow moving river. Just make sure the hood is tied off really well and place your pack slightly in the rear and you can hold on and paddle with your feet...keeping your clothes (removed and placed in the "boat") and pack dry.

Forgot to add that the weight isn't bad...you do need a ground cover and if it's cold a sleeping bad (or natural insulation). I used mine with my bivi bag and a large mosquito bar net folded over it...it works, but now you're getting into tent weights and my Hennessy hammock has it beat from there.

Interesting, I hadn't seen this before.

I like the groundcloth footpocket idea, I'll try that with some 3 mil plastic.

Pretty cool, but wouldn't just blow away? It's super light I'm sure, but pretty flimsy.

Not to mention just more crap to take up space and weigh you down.

You guys are starting to worry me...too dependent on this tech stuff. Losing your sense of ingenuity. NO MORE TECH FUH YOU! :p

It's just an electrical current making the poncho stiff, not too hi tech. In the, leaf+pin+water= compass range.

Somewhat off topic, but I thought it funny to share. The guy in the videos looks EXACTLY like a friend of mine I work wirth. Not somewhat, not quite a bit, he is this guys TWIN.

When I first watched this video I near fell out of my chair, and then laughed for a good 30min...I still am unable to watch it without laughing. What makes it funny is this is the last thing my friend would do, he is not into the outdoors at all...its just makes it even funnier.

I sent the link to his girlfriend before I sent it to him...and she thought we were trying to play a trick on her...that we had made the video as some joke. its uncanny how much these 2 look alike.

My friend is now officially Russ the Weekend Adventurer and does he ever hate it.

Still laughing days later....:)

Could'nt you just cut a couple of thumb/ index finger size saplings and do the same thing? And not have to carry the poles.--KV

That's neat but I'd rather just bring a tarp to string up. Better coverage, somewhere to put the pack to keep it dry, and I can wear the poncho when I set it up.
