This is a great story of survival and one I have followed through the years

If I recall there was a documentary on this. Can't recall the name of the video. Might do an internet search.

Very interesting story. And Jeff you are right: some of the others who initially survived the crash just ended up sitting down and dying.

Laurence Gonzales dissects her story in his book: Deep Survival Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why. I like this book as it examines some of the psychological factors that play a role in survival. Worth reading.

I am not sure of the movie, I think it was "A Man Named Horse"??? In the movie he was mauled pretty bad on the back and laid up against a rotting animal to let the maggotts eat out the dead & infected flesh. I am not sure if it this would work, but this story/thread remined me of that movie scene.

I heard of a paracheutist recently that fell 5000 feet and survived the fall with many broken bones. Its amazing that anyone sustaining a fall from that hieght would survive, Count their blessings or just lucky.

Rotte, Deep Survival is an excellent book. I was lucky enough to get to read the galley proof before it was released. One of my favorite all-time "survival" books.

Is it weird that i found the part about her wounds being infested with maggots more disturbing then the part about her falling out of an airplane?

Just thinking about parasites make me feel ill...

Though actually, JeffS1 brings up an interesting point.
I've heard of doctors (in developed lands) using maggots to clean certain types of injurys. Apparently they ONLY each dead flesh...though I wonder if you have to get the right kind of maggot. :P

:D you ever seen the Gladiator? Someone ends up putting maggots on Russel Crow's arm to keep the wound clean.

Simply amazing! She ought to write a book about her experience if she hasn't.

Good lord, what an amazing story! The whole larva thing is why I have NO intention of heading to the tropics if I can help it! Bot flies gross the stuffing out of me! :barf:
