This is a Pipe Thread

"Cigarettes are the thing that have tarnished the real image of smoking, probably forever."

I concur

Got another pipe question someone may be able to help me out with. When I ordered some Missouri pipes from a dealer named Frenchy he included a lot of freebies one being a bag of a vanilla tobacco.

Anyway I smoked that first then got to the Mac Barren Virginia ready-rubbed I bought. Trouble is I have more of a problem actually smoking the Mac Barren. It doesn't seem to light as well or stay lit long like the other stuff does, I can easily smoke the vanilla hardly relighting and getting it going easy but I have a hard time with the Mac Barren. The Virginia is cut longer/bigger and seems to be drier yet stickier than the vanilla and I wondered if that may have something to do with it, maybe I should break it up a bit or pack it differently than the other stuff?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have been a pipe smoker for well over thirty years. For my taste Italian pipes are the best smoke. I use to pay $25.00 for a Castello and now the same pipe is over $300.00, Castello and Savinelli Autographs are my favorite. I like a full English blend tobacco so my tobacco of choice for the last twenty years has been Dunhill 965.

Frenchy rules. I've bought a few pipes from him, including that Larsen I posted.

Try chopping up the tobacco a bit. Also make sure you're packing the pipe correctly. Pack it in layers so that it gets compressed a bit. It's a happy medium you're shooting for--not so loose that it won't stay lit and not so tight that it can't get air.

Here's a pair of homemades I finished this weekend.

Thanks Guyon I'll give it a shot. Yea he seems like he runs a good shop. Nice looking pipes John-Boy

My pipes are all hand blown glass... and usually filled with something besides tobacco:eek:

If the Macbaren fails to keep alight(you sure you are not applying cigarette smoking techniques here??)tease it out a bit, rub it in your palms and pack lightly in the bowl. That should make drawing easier, if the bowl is small and over crammed then lighting is a problem. i used to fill a pipe only 2 thirds for this reason.
Macbaren used to make a tobacco called Norwood, that was very satisfying.
Dunhill tobacco particularly Royal Yacht is a fine smoke too. dunhill make lifetime pipes but very dear, Josef Stalin's favourite pipe actually! Bit like hearing Bin Laden favours Chivas Regal as his daily tipple....

yea I may have packed it too much , what do you mean by cigarette techniques? Thanks for the advice

Yeah, the cigarette companies actually put cocoa (as in the chocolate stuff) in the cigarette. The cocoa makes the lungs more receptive to nicotine; therefore, making the the cigarettes more addictive.

I don't THINK it makes too much of a difference, the pipe itself is a filter. The majority of pipe-smokers do not inhale.

i saw a program on history channel about tobacco and cigs IIRC are mostly tobacco "by-products" now since they increase nicotine levels and thus "hook" ya faster and harder. and are probably worse for ya than cigs of 50 yrs ago.

i used to smoke a pipe when hunting and outdoors but now its more cigars, of course i still smoke cigs, wanna quit lol, i have cut way down form a few yrs ago, shoot if for no other reason the cost is outta sight now.

Cigarettes is the analog in tobacco that's equivalent to malt liquor, basically, the leftovers

yea even with health reasons and personal preference aside I would never take up cigarettes because of the price, with the taxes around here if your a pack a day smoke your spending more than $180 a month on your habit.

WOW!

And to think I spend 16 dollars for a pound of my P-19 burley from Stoker and that lasts me a bit over a month. And I smoke three or four pipes a day. :D

I have about 50 pipes in all price ranges, I love pipes & smoking different tobaccos. tobacco that is hard to light, can be dryed out a little because of too much moisture. I like the aromatics & they tend to be very moist, but they smell wonderful !

Worked on my packing method a bit and rubbed the tobacco in my palms to loosen it up and make it a bit finer before packing and it smokes great now.

Smoked an armomatic in my James Upshall this afternoon while I worked in my shop.

I prefer a bent pipe when I am going to be doing something with my hands.

Otherwise, I prefer a straight pipe. One hand to hold the pipe and one hand to hold the whiskey.

Evocative thread. 30 years or so since I last smoked a pipe. I used to smoke with a university friend. He killed himself and I lost interest in the pipe. Only a cigar or two a year since then. Mention of Balkan Sobranie has me wondering if it is time to pick one up again.
